I have a question about my 7 month old intact male Rottweiler. I read in Ed Frawley's article about neutering that Rottweilers as house dogs should be neutered at 6 months. Is this because they're dominant dogs generally? I ask because he mentioned Rottweilers, Pitbulls, and one other breed specifically.
I've posted on other training forums (Rottweiler.net was one of them) and a lot of people suggest waiting until after 12 months for health reasons, and growth reasons. My boy is doing great with training, so I was planning to wait, but what do you guys think? Should I neuter him or wait?
Thanks,
Ryan
I'm with Michael. Most (all?) of what I've read (and been taught, as a vet tech) advocates leaving males intact until they are physically mature, which for the larger breeds can be 2+ years.
My guy was chopped at the tender age of 1, just before I got him. Oh well!
I know people with more experience will drop in soon- but my first questions would be is this a working/sport pup?
Are you having aggression/dominance/pack leadership problems?
If you are going to be very involved in training and exercising the dog and take a pro active leadership role then you should wait until he is two. If he is just going to recieve minimal training and just hang around then you may want to do it earlier
I'm having zero aggression/dominance issues, but I figured 7 months is too early? I'm not sure about that though..
I exercise him a lot, but not as much as I would like to since he's growing so fast right now. He does a formal obedience class and I do training exercises that I've learned from here.
He's just a house dog though, and I dont plan on working him in a sport or competition. He's going to be my hiking partner and companion as well as a deterant to anyone looking to break in to our house.

Dennis, I believe I am on-board with why to wait if you're a proactive trainer/leader, and not wait if it's just a house dog.... but could you elaborate for the OP?

For that type of activity you want the full benefit of growth hormones for muscular skeletal developement as well as mental maturity. But I want to stress, you have to have the the leadership and obedience wired tight. And that doesn't mean cookie pushing training from Petsmart
edit to add, containment needs to be near bullet proof. between now and the time you nueter. he is old enough to sire puppies now
