I just got a 1 yr old 85 lb male GSD that I hope to train as a patrol/narc dog. He has great prey drive and passed all the tests that Ed had in his bite training video. The only question I have is if he is alpha dominate like he should be. He loves going after little dogs and cats but he seems to be scared of my 70 male gsd mix who is pretty much a wimp and not alpha in the least except growling at other dogs. He seems to have good confidence with his ears upright and forward but his tail droops a lot even though its not between his legs. He has a great personality and loves people so I'm wondering just how good a K9 partner he will make. I ordered the two klink dvd's but I'm wondering if I'm fighting a losing battle.
Do anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Ken I assume your other dog was already an established member of the household? This makes a difference..the food chain may change over time. Its not a great sign but not the worst either. Remember you are training a dog for narc work which doesn't not require the "Alpha" type behavior you speak of and in fact Patrol work requires good nerve and confidence of course but I doubt you will rarely have to confront other dogs. Having courage when faced with human adversaries is the key. Also remember alot of good patrol dogs and working dogs in general draw courage from their owners like a big truck sucking gas from the gas tank. Your dog needs to bond more with you and you need to keep putting this dog in scenarios where it always wins and receives praise from you. If you stay in the fight with the dog and the dog always wins with your approval you can build up dogs that maybe aren't 100% perfect(no dog is 100% perfect) Derek
