Hi all, I have a shindig to go to. seems like no pet friendly hotels, neither appropriate for the pocket. Is there any way to kennel my Chico with out exposing him to the so called bordatella?
A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself. ~Josh Billings
From my experience any dog can carry it and not know about it until a cough occurs. Unfortunately, it can happen anywhere at any time but it is more prevelant in kennels because more dogs are around. I would first check the local kennels and ask what their procedure is if they notice a dog showing signs of "kennel cough" and go from there.
Bordetella is a bacteria that causes a "whooping cough" type syndrome. The "shot" is actually some of the weakened germ dropped right into the nose. I don't think that it is a "shot" that you need to worry about giving, but other folks may have different
opinions. The protection does not last very long, 6 mos I think.
Any chance Chico could come along, give you a welcome break from the shindig?
I have a suggestion for you, or rather I can tell you how I have gotten around that circumstance.
Instead of boarding with a kennel, you could hire a dog sitter to come in as many times as you would like while you are away.
There are people out there of high caliber, in regards to knowledge and this way you could avoid having to deal with the whole vaccination thing.
I found a reputable dog sitter who feeds raw and will do exactly as I say, should we need to go out of town. I found her while visiting a specialty dog store(they carry high end super premium kibbles and treats etc The owner of this store special orders my bulk salmon oil) but I would check out a place like this to see if there are any good referrals for dog sitters who could come to your home or you would feel comfortable having your dogs stay with. Many are bonded and insured as this is their career.
Her prices are a little higher, but for me, it is worth the price to keep my two healthy and happy while I am away, and avoiding the whole vaccination thing, as most kennels insist on it.
Just an idea I thought was worth mentioning.
Have fun at your shindig!
Bordatella is a snort and you would want to do it 2 wks prior. I have not had anyone actively symptomatic at my kennel but had two clients this season say their dogs got it soon after leaving. To note...both had had the vaccine. Which is one reason I do not require it. Some of the kennels are now requiring it and the FLU. At some point there has to be a limit.
