WOAH! Got my prong today- talk about an instant fix! I feel like I'm cheating, because it's just so easy!
Since Koenig is a rescue, there are some details in his past that are not crystal clear. It appears he's worn a prong before. The second I got it on, we had 0 drive, and very little food motivation. Went out and played fetch and tug, then took a stroll once his attitude was improved, and he was back to happy, crazy, slightly idiotic DS behaviors. He was GREAT on leash! Amazing difference, which is why I feel like I'm cheating... lol. I'm a much more of a successful horse trainer then dog trainer, and generally with horses, quick fixes DO NOT last. I have faith this one will though, and I'll be able to wean him off it eventually.
Nope- normal one, with a cover on it for less rude remarks! I thought about the funky one, but I just wasn't sure. The funky one is twice the price, so that spoke strongly to me as well.
But, yes. I know what I thought of them before I was 'enlightened' on the true mechanism of them. I've seen PLENTY of people get nasty comments about prongs out in public, and I live in the middle of a city. We walk in busy parks, with lots of other dog people. (and mostly people with easy going dogs who'd never have use for a prong collar)
I'm a pretty non-confrontational person, and the cover was cheap.
I was walking my 6yo terrier at a nearby town farm with the prong on. The manager saw me and came over to talk to me. She saw the collar and said: "Why does he have THAT collar on?" I was polite. Never mind that I had a conversation with her prior to this about all the people who bring their completely out of control dogs there and let them loose to harass everybody.
I'll be the first to admit they look pretty harsh when you don't know how the work, or when they are used improperly. I was one of those people. They just need to be proactive, and do a little research. Then, leave all of us folks with the high drive dogs that use a prong alone if they still don't like the idea!!
I found that so many people assume the prong meant Falcon was aggressive more so than any comments about the collar itself. I think the cover is a great idea in either situation.
