What is going on? Is it just me or are some officers getting a little carried away? I mean no offense to most of them, but I have been hearing a lot of stories like this lately.
I heard about that one too. I can't seem to find the original article, but it seems like the police are shooting dogs after they fight with other dogs, even after the fight has been broken up.
One thing to remember is that no matter how out of control or dangerous an owner's dog is/was, they will *always* claim that it was not necessary for an officer to shoot their dog.
I'm not trying to assign blame in this case on either the PD or the dog's owner, but the above statement should be considered whenever there's a case of law enforcement shooting a dog, human nature being what it is.
I understand the Golden was blind, but that doesn't mean it cant be mean or dominate. If my dog was on a leash and a dog off leash started something, wouldn't my dog be within rights to defend its self? Even the owner of the Golden said he didn't know if it was the right thing to do to shoot the two dogs.
I think the idea of shooting dogs (Or other pet animals) really sparks a natural, visceral reaction in most people because animals can't hope to match that level of force. I read the article, and I wonder if the officer's reaction was influenced by what kind of crowd was gathering. I can imagine that a fight between two or more large dogs in an area where children are gathering, would naturally put people, especially kids, at risk for being harmed by accident (of course, the same goes for firing in a gun in such a situation).
