Is this first pic a bull mastiff? It looks to me a lot different... I am studying the breed and had some other questions too. What is the biggest difference other than size and how much they drool between a Bull Mastiff and just a Mastiff?
The bulldog used was not the modern bulldog, but something closer to the Olde English Bulldogge, which is a new breed that attempts to be closer to the original bulldog (in looks anyway). http://www.oldeenglishbulldoggekennelclub.com/
Right. Is this the same breed that started the AmStaff. I remember reading about a bulldog that is now extinct , being involved with the Am Staff. I can't remember the name, but I think it had Olde in it. Yep that's the name Olde English Bulldogge
The first pic looks like a bullmastiff mix. That's what Chula is.
Here's a link to a breeder that describes the origin of the breed. They can have a more challenging temperment than a mastiff typically would. http://www.bullmastiffdesorchibels.com/origin.html
Thats what I thought because there is not any wrinkles really on the face.
Does this look like an engish mastiff? I can hardly tell the difference... just that this one has a lot of wrinkles and very big. It is at 1:40 in the movie.
Elizabeth- Are you considering an English Mastiff?
Keep in mind that what is called "American Mastiff" is an Eng. Mastiff crossed with an Anatolian Shepherd ????. AKC does not recognize them.
I love English Mastiffs, I was considering one when my last GSD passed away. I just can't move past the short life span. I have considered a rescue as my second large breed.
I have a 2 1/2 year old American Mastiff and one of the things that drew me to them was the longer life span than the English Mastiffs and the Bullmastiffs. That and the fact that they seem to have less health issues and don't tend to drool as much. (I'm lucky; mine doesn't drool at all.)
I'm not interested in doing any showing at this time in my life, so the fact that they are not a recognized breed was not a issue for me.

I am considering a mix. But a half mastiff at that. I am just keeping my eyes open. I really liked the other half mastiff we had and just trying to educate myself a little more. If I had the money than I would find a great breeder and make sure hips and all were good but since mixes are normally quite healthy I think I would be happier with a mix. So many dogs out there that need homes besides. I never had any idea there was a American Mastiff.... The engish mastiff has a part to play in most of all mastiffs though right? I don't like the part of how long they live but while they are alive they are great dogs...
