I think that sometimes, some of us forget that ultimately, if the very worst should ever happen, its not the news media and reporters that protect our rights when they report what happens. Its certainly not our goverment and all their agencies, good or bad, who protect our rights. Its not the civil rights groups, lawyers, ACLU, etc. It is not even the (good) law enforcement officers. Even those brave firefighters, those who rush in when wimps like me run, they are not the saviours of our rights. It is our military. Those brave men and women who volunteer to serve our nation, they are the ultimate guarantors of our freedoms and rights. That is why it is so important for all of us to do our due diligence at election time. For we are choosing those who will be in charge of whether our husbands and wives, our sons and daughters are sent off to do what our leaders ask of them. If our leaders are not up to that task, then it is not their fault, it is ours for electing them.

It still amazes me that we can elect a President that has not served in the Armed Forces, that should be a mandatory requirement for someone that will be the "commander in chief".

It's funny, but the science fiction novel Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein was required reading at all the Military Academies, and it had a government based on requiring service ( either military or civilian ) to achieve citizenship.
It was totally voluntary but service gave you the right to vote or hold office, with the theory being that a person that was willing to make a sacrifice for the greater good would be a more responsible citizen.
