I recently moved and have a dog run in my back yard that I place two feet off of my neighbors yard. The fence is 5 ft tall 12 guage mesh 2x4 wire. I was in the house puting up blinds etc and heard my GSD aggressivly barking. I can see the whole back yard from my window so looked out. My GSD was 4 ft off of my fence and was letting my neighbor have it. I tapped on the window and told him no. He stopped until the neighbor waved her hand at him and fronting him up again. He again proceeded to bark aggressivly.(He is trained in Schutzhund and is very protective of my daughter and I) To my utter amazement she reached across the fences and sprayed my dog with mace. He turned his side catching most of it on his back. I also noticed the beagle take off running when the bi$#@ raised her hand so I felt pretty certain this was not the first time. I can be really aggressive with idiots like this so chose not to go confront her at that time but put my dogs inside in a crate. I noticed the Beagle had blisters across her nose and top lip which were not there the day before.I was pissed!!!
I called the Sheriff's office and when the officer came out he got the info needed and came around to see my fence/dogs. My GSD ran up to us and stared him down, looked at me wagged his tail, stared him down again NEVER barking since he was not posing a threat. He stated he was not agressive, I stated I know but if you front him, wave at him or if he went for me he would become that way. Then the beagle ran over and he stated "OMG!!!Look at her nose! That is a chemical burn." I stated I did not know for sure when it happened.
He talked to the people who of course denied everthing. This is where I was proud of our area Sheriffs office. He let them know even though they denied it the beagle had burns on her face and it was against the law to lure, trap and abuse and animal. I was within my rights with my fence and the dogs were not posing a threat to them or their property and if anything happened again I could have them arrested. The Sheriff filed it with animal control as an abuse case.
It boiled down that they are mad because I put a fence up and they are afraid of dogs.I had been harassed from the beginning by these people when I started putting up my fence so I had expected some trouble but not that kind of trouble. They are the neighborhood bullies apparently from reports of other neighbors.
As soon as I can afford it an 8ft privacy wall is going up on that side of the yard!!!! Chalk one up for the dog owner here!!!!

Ugly side facing them of course. I told my neighbor that one more problem from him and his side would be painted hot pink..... No zoning rules against it, I checked.
I would be very cautious with your neighbors and would not leave my dogs out unsupervised at all.
I would not put anything pass someone that would mace a fenced dog.
You have more patience than me. I think Iwould have climbed over the fence and put her mace somewhere nice and warm! I have recently finished fencing my yard in as my St. Bernard was constantly charging my neigbors fence as he and her boxer were always facing off. We put enough room between the fences so there is a buffer zone. I can't believe that someone would be that unfeeling. It almost sounds like she was trying to provoke an attack so she could claim your dog was a threat. I love the idea of a hot pink fence on thier side. Watch your dogs, your neigbors sound unstable. How about some pink flamingos?
I can think of a few of what are probably unproductive ideas for dealing with a neighbor like that.
I do like the hot pink idea though! I'd probably carry it too far by inviting the local graffiti artists over for a bbq and for desert.......to help themselves to a blank canvas.
Here's the paint boys!

Most definitely! And they would be provided with the most obnoxious colors of paint I could find!
TOTAL agreement on NEVER leaving the dogs out unsupervised. These people sound nutty enough to resort to poison. It might be fun to watch from some place close and hidden with your own can of pepper spray.....
WOW, is all I can say. Makes me glad that my only 2 neighbors are good & they have dogs that are far more obnoxious then mine are ever allowed to be. (back of my house is all woods) I even let one of them use my fence (that is set 2' inside of my property lines) as a fence side for his now fenced yard. That may change if he ever decided to sell, though.
I love Randy's idea about the graffiti colored fence. I'll have to remember that one, but I hope that I never need to resort to that.

Ditto on the NEVER leaving my dogs alone out there. I might even resort to teaching food refusal, just in case. They really sound like malicious people. It's too bad that people have to be like that.

That's funny Betty! You're right about not leaving your dogs unsupervised, and I would check thier run and change the water in it before putting them in there. To lure a dog over just so they can mace them indicates a pretty unstable individual. I would NOT put poison past a person like this.

You can set up a security camera for very little cost and it's SUPER effective for dealing with people screwing with your dogs. I would also encourage you to walk your yard with your dogs in the mornings to make sure nothing hazardous has been tossed over the fence.
Stuff like this makes me giddy I have the neighbors I do.
