Quick question. I live in virginia and we have an epidemic of stink bugs and grass hoppers/crickets. I been notice that my gsd love to play with the crickets and grass hoppers as if they are a toy. Then followed by a few catch and releases she swallow them. I stop her when I can however I wonder if this might have any bad effects?
I imagine coyotes, wolves, etc... play with and eat bugs occassionally, they are probably pretty much protein. (My chickens sure eat a whole boat load of them and do fine). I think some insects are eaten by humans as well, but with that said, I probably wouldn't let her go nuts on them, but an occassional grasshopper shouldn't hurt your pup.
I agree with Barbara, most farms have cats to eat the rodents and bugs and they seem to be fine. I think a few wont hurt but a buffet style dinner would not be good.
A little Pointer female came in to board at the clinic I worked at the time. What her real name was, I can't recall, because I remember her to this day as "June Bug". For the first 2 days she was there, her stools were solid june bugs. She must have eaten thousands of "em!
I try to not let my dogs eat any insect simply because they are hyper sensitive and have tons of allergies. If they by accident get a bee or a hornet I don't want to deal with the possible reaction. But that's the only reason I won't let them play with bugs.
Ruby's favorite activity is chasing grasshoppers and moths in the backyard. She eats a few, but I'm not worried. Keeps her well exercised. My other GSD loved to catch grasshoppers too. The dogs don't bother the stinkbugs though. Nasty....
My dogs and cat LOVE to catch and eat bugs - more power to them, I strongly dislike bugs. lol I have been known to grab June Bugs and throw them to the cat (or at my daughter - makes her squeal). I know, I know - I'm a baaaad mom.

The other night We had a spider skittering for it's life down the hallway with a cocker spaniel in hot pursuit. I just have to watch that the youngest papillon doesn't start eating bugs. Her face swells up and last time she ate a spider I thought she was starting to have breathing issues.
Oh and Cicadas, they must taste good because they gobble those up like it is steak or something!!
The cats on the other hand are grasshopper obsessed and have a lot of fun playing with them then eating them. Those and little grass snakes
We didn't have Cicadas this year, and I kinda missed their incessant "singing"...
When Doug and I were first married, we occassionally had crickets in our little apartment from time to time. Our cat at the time, Ditto, loved to catch them and bring them to us - in bed, with their back legs removed so they spun around in circles... Cats are so weird in how they like to bring "gifts" to show off their hunting prowess!!
