Hi there, I am a Police K9 Handler from Souther Ontario. We recently just lost a handler and that puts us to 4 Handlers. We have 5 platoons. So, now one platoon does not have a dog working.
We were tasked of coming up with a new K9 schedule that we would work, and it would be different then the patrol schedule.
We need 24/7 (as best we can) coverage. We thought about the 4 on 4 off 12hours... but there wont be any time that we can train together.. unless one of the shifts adjusts his start times.. but thats ok.. only other problem with that is, we will be training with the same guy each time..
My question is... Are there any of ya's out there with a 4dog unit and what schedule do you work to get the ocverage you need and traniing time in.
Four dog units are indeed difficult to schedule, and ensure you can get your training. The best answer, although it doesn't fit your suggestions, is to have a "training day" where all attend. One dog, of the group, can be on-call if needed. On-duty training could then be accomplished by having overlapping shifts. There will be times you won't have your 24/7 coverage and that's not even considering sick/annual leave etc. Less people means less coverage. I understand wanting to do more with less. One has to balance "more with less" with realism. In a pinch it's understandable. When the administration realizes the job can continually be done and doesn't recognize sacrifices being made, then proficience, moral and the overall effectivness of the unit will suffer.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
regarding the 12 hr schedule.. is that one that you use? Also, which are days, and nights? Do they alternate? And if you use it, how do you like it?? Our days and afternoons are 10hrs and our nights are 8hrs.
I've never worked 12's. Hear a lot of people that like them tho
