I received the worst news for my German Shepherd. Even though I have had him on interceptor, he is positive with heart worms. I am just sick with the news. I am talking with my vet on treatment protocols. Even if you think your pet is covered, please have them tested. This is the second dog in our club this week to be on interceptor and become positive.

Lorelei,
I am so sorry that your dog is sick. I remember a post from last April(?) by David C. Frost. In it, he indicated that there were areas of the country experiencing positive tests on dogs that had been on preventative medications. I believe he said that this unusual event was being explored by Auburn Univ. and the Univ. of Virginia. You might try a forum search and see if there is anything in that post that would be helpful to your dog. Sending good thoughts.

Oh no! I hope he recovers with no issues! I've got Vader on interceptor so I will definitely be looking into this issue further! Are they going to pay for treatment? I used to work for a vet and as long as you could show that you had purchased the prevention on a continual basis, the company would cover the cost for a hw positive dog. I'm SO sorry you and your dog are going through this!

I'd be curious to know what part of the country you are in. I posted sometime back about a problem in Eastern Arkansas, Western TN and south to Mississippi. All the dog I have stationed West of the TN River take their HW preventative on the 1st and 15th of the month. I along with a couple of other police departments and some SAR groups have had positives in dogs that have been on year-round preventative.
If your vet suggests using the preventative as the treatment, go somewhere else and get proper treatment. The theory is; if you use the preventative to kill the larvea, the adult worms will die a natural death. I followed that advice from a vet in West TN and it almost cost me a 6,000 dollar dog. Fortunately after some TLC, 6 months and a very savy vet, the dog was saved and returned to duty.
If you are in that area, I'd suggest having the HW test conducted semi-annually until they can figure out what in the world is going on.

David frost,
I am in W .TN area. My vet has actually advised doing the two injections and keeping him crated for the next 3 mo or longer if needed. Can you give me an idea of what you went through, saw in your dog wth treatment. My vet has been very thorough, I just like to hear first hand so I can learn as much as possible before we go through this.

Most of the dogs we've had treated with no particular problems. Follow the suggestion about kennel rest. Granted that isn't easy with high drive dogs we select for our business. Keeping then in their kennel and allowing them outside breaks with no real play periodss, worked ok for us. The only dog I had a problem with was the one that wanted to use the preventative as treatment. I didn't feel good about it at the time, but I agreed. I've always said, I'm a dog trainer not a vet, therefore, I generally go with what the professionals recommend. Five months after starting that treatment, the dog collapsed during training. the intial prognosis was permanent damage and doubtful the dog would return to work. Fortunately, that was not the case, the has fully recovered and if back to work. I was think it was a series of three injections, but I guess it could have been two. I'd certainly test every six months.

David, what is the reason that you are HW treating 2x a month rather than the usual 1x? Is it due to the location of the dog with regard to the incidence of HW? What preventative are you using? Is it the same one 2x a month or do you rotate? Just curious.

I stated incorrectly, it is a 3 stage injection.
Anne, after a person I trained with kennel came down 6 of 11 dogs with heartworms while on preventative, they test bi annually now to catch any breakthroughs early. The sooner you catch it the less damage done and hopefully less invasive treatment is needed. Since we now know breakthroughs are occurring while a dog is covered the only thing to do is be more proactive and test more.

I'm sure David will clarify, but I wonder if he wasn't referring to treatments on an every month and a HALF schedule (45 days, or the first of one month, the 15th of the next, then the first of the following, etc). Some people opt for that over the recommended every 30 days because the duration of the doses is actually closer to 45 days than 30 - if you can keep your calendar straight, you avoid giving a whole month or 2 of unnecessary chemicals over the course of a year. The 30 day recommendation is more for dosage convenience than actual drug efficacy - at least that's what I've garnered from discussion here in the past.
