hi everyone
has anyone experianced pannus in there gsd,my dog has it and is being treated with maxitrol eye drops. My dog is 4 years old and seemingly between 3 and 5 years is usually when it appears.
The vet has told me this will continue on and off for the life of the dog.
Has anyone else had this with there gsd.
My last GSD developed pannus in one eye around age 6. He passed away from an unreleated issue almost 1.5 years ago. My Vet also treated it topically and told me that it would be something I would be dealing with for the rest of the dog's life.

Robert,
My female GSD had corneal pannus in both eyes (typical and atypical). She had it for many years and her vision was fine with treatment. This is a disease that is treatable but there is no cure. She had cyclosporin drops daily in both eyes and saw her veterinary opthamologist once or twice a year. If you have access to a specialist, I would highly recommend making an appointment. The one we saw was extremely helpful. I know that this topic has been discussed before. So perhaps, a forum search for pannus or corneal pannus would be helpful to you.
I had the same experience as Mary with my last GSD. Don't be lazy about the drops, the condition will only worsen. But the drops keep it at bay and the dog's vision was good. The vet eye specialist was very helpful, my regular vet had prescribed drops, but not at the same frequency. When we went to the eye vet, he upped the frequency and the dog responded well.
PS get the drops on line (way cheaper) just get the prescription from your vet - they like to sell meds at the office but definitely mark them up...
x100 on the "for life" comments. My GSD had it and she was able to function normally with the daily drops. No evidence of poor eyesight or any functional difficulties.
Thanks for the replies folks,i have seen it in the book i have on gsds and on the internet. My dog has it in both eyes,it starts of with his eyes being matted in the morning and has had raised pink dotes in both eyes.
It doesnt get that bad anymore as i know how to treat it.My vet suggested stopping the eye drops to see how long he could go without it coming back,it came back within 2 weeks. After reading your advice i think thats a bad idea, ive never seen an eye specialist so that could be the next step.
