So the other day I was out training my dog at the tennis courts behind my apartment. (Our normal location) We were working on obedience. Fuss, recalls-totally normal stuff. Tug is our reward, so its pretty high energy, with lots of noise. A guy standing outside of another apartment asked me if my dog was a purebred canine. Ummm....
Yup, he sure is! (OMG, really? Dude, go back to 4th grade. DOGS are Canine. Or K-9, or DOGS!)
ROFL! I didn't bother to go into the details with him.... (this is a Dutch Shepherd, no they are not GSD's, and any breed of dog is a canine, or Canis lupus familiaris)
I think what he was trying to ask was if Koenig was a police k-9, but I didn't feel the need to go into details. Wrapped up our training, and hid inside till the weirdo's left.
It was amusing, to say the least.

For sure, there's got to be a little chimpanzee in there too. From what Kelly keeps telling us, he sounds like such a little monkey.

You're right Jamie, I didn't even consider that. Now that you've mentioned it- equine must be part of the equation. . . Have you seen them JUMP? Koenig can clear 8' easy when he wants to. (As is when I'd like him to stay IN, while I'm OUT)

I would have assumed he was asking me if my dog was a purebred or a mutt.... A lot of folks are not familiar with Dutch Shepherds. He might have just been trying to sound "smarter" by using the word canine... maybe he was flirting.

Oh, lucky me. At least he was wearing a belt. That's a prime sign of a classy guy...
Wait. Does it still count as class if the belt is cinched tight BELOW his bum? LOL
I hadn't thought about purebred vs mutt. That very well could have been what he intended. I still like to think he's just an idiot. On a DS forum there was recently a thread about what goofy ID's we'd had regarding our striped puppies. Some bizarre ones came out.
I wanted to share the K-9 with you Leerburg folks though. I thought you might snicker at it, like I did.

I can understand the humor, I just don't think someone is an idiot because they've never seen a DS.
Assuming of course, he wasn't wearing JUST a belt... THAT would have made me hide inside too - or maybe just fall on the grass laughing... depending on the size of his buckle.

This guy kinda radiated 'idiot'... ya know what I mean? Just the kind of person I might cross the street to avoid meeting.
Thankfully, he was fully clothed. Including mickey mouse boxers which I got a full view of, as the belt held his pants just above his knees. ROFL. Didn't notice the buckle. I was too distracted by the odd question!
I can't fairly judge anyone for not knowing what a DS looks like. Koe is far from the perfect example, anyhow. I just freak out when someone actually asks me 'is that a DS?' Then they've got my full attention! Must be a working dog person!

My parents have a DS that I helped them purchase last year. He's a very handsome, well-trained dog and my mom walks him a lot. He's the typical dark brindle color.
One day while out walking, they ran into a guy who was walking his unruly standard Schnauzer. After spouting off how well bred his super-duper dog was (champion parents, etc. etc.), he asked my mom what mix of breeds her dog was, and my mom replied that he wasn't a mix, but was a pure-bred DS. He said, "Can't be. They don't come in that color."

Riiiggggghhhhhtttt...... supposed to be black and tan? Or Sable? Maybe the odd black?
I had a guy who owns working line GSD's (a Chiropractor that I was interviewing with for a job, actually) assume that since I said I had a DUTCH Shepherd, that it must have been like a Czech, DDR, etc line of GSD.
I bit my tongue and didn't explain. He met Koe at the end of the interview (he was in the car) and commented on the odd coloring. LOL.
