Does any one know why the TSA does not use dogs to screen airline passengers?
Seems it would be much more effective than "pat downs" and Xrays for explosive detection.
Not enough trained dogs -- they are only effective for a limited amount of time. Even fewer trained handlers. Probably also a bias towards profitable, high-tech solutions promoted by highly paid lobbiests and ex-government officials. You don't get promoted for buying a dog. Don't forget about the profit potential of a cell-phone snap of the x-ray of latest celebrity du jour.
A dog's best use would for watching the subject's reaction a sniff. Never underestimate the compliance potential of a large sable male.
Of course, there is an assumption TSA is actually looking for terrorists.
I personally would very much prefer a good crotch sniffing from a beautiful sable male to being groped by a total human stranger.
I know that our airport is constantly hiring for TSA screeners, it obviously has a high turn over rate and they seem to have a hard time getting qualified people.
IMO one good dog and handler team could replace 5 or 6 lumps with bad attitudes.
However, I imagine the reason they don't use them to sniff folks is that there are people who are terrified of dogs or allergic to them. Maybe some people might object to getting GSD/Mal/Lab hair all over their dark suit pants. I know I always seem to be seated next to those types when I fly with my SAR dog in-cabin.
