Has anyone has the problem of the x-pen being too stimulating for their pup? I find that no matter what tactics I try, Faroh just cannot stay in the x-pen for extended periods of time.
The older he gets, the shorter the time gets. It's not that he can't stay contained, because as soon as I put him in his crate, he settles and focuses on one toy or a bully stick, and chills - sometimes for a couple hours. At work, he's fine in the crate for hours on end.
But, in the x-pen, he just jumps at the side and screams... no matter what I have in there with him. With one exception - I just recently got the buster IQ treat ball, which will keep him occupied until it's empty.
He screams when I'm in the room, if I'm not actually looking directly at him, and he screams if I leave. I can then put him in the crate and he's fine.
So, the solution sounds easy - just keep him in the crate? I just feel that the x-pen gives him more opportunity to move around and play...
X-pen is definitely more stimulating for Haydn but I don't find it to be a problem.
We use x-pen for teaching him things, not putting him up. As in "chill out", or have Haydn in the pen and other dogs loose around, ask everybody to do something, like SIT, to get them used to be around each other.
If I cannot pay attention and overlook some purposeful activity, Haydn goes into one of the crates around the house or in the car.

Above is the problem, and below is the reason why.

In an x-pen he can move around more, and stimulate, in a crate it's more like being in bed, it allows less movement, and has more of a calming, time to relax effect.
Thanks Kadi. I actually have since gotten rid of the pen. Faroh is either crated, or allowed to "chill" in the same room as me. He is pretty good about it. Even when loose in the room, he is never anywhere near the frantic state he would get into in the pen.
