Yikes, and I had problems with the little decorative spikes they have on collars now (thought it would be soooo much fun to have a spiked collar on my dog, and it was...until he nuzzled my leg and it torn a hole in my pants leg)
I can see why they were used though, would be great wolf protection (and stop and intruder grabbing at your dog's collar)
Let me tell you - those collars HURT if you get scratched by one. I have a friend who has Akbashes to guard her small flock of sheep from coyotes and wolves and her one male wears one of those traditional Turkish collars. Azure loves me since he has known me since he was a pup and when he came up to rub against me this past spring his collar scratched me through my long sleeve shirt. Good thing I was current on my tetnus shot ;-)
