I am at my wits end. I have neighbors who have a yellow lab. This poor dog has had no formal training that I can see. The problem is that everytime I take my dog out to run or train this neighbor dog is at the fence barking constantly. He never stops barking the whole time I am out with my dog. The neighbors try to shut him up and even take him in once in awhile. But the next day it's the same thing. I can hear the frustration in their voice trying to get the dog to listen.
Is there anything that I can do to stop his barking. Do those bark deterrents actually work? You know the ones that look like a birdhouse and have a range of 50ft? I sent a letter to them a few minutes ago, because I couldn't put up with it anymore. This has been going on for years.
BTW my dog never barks at them!
Brando (2 years) and Bacchus (6 mos)

Those devices are normally returned a few days after purchase. I know this because I work at a place that sells them. If the dog is determined enough, it won't make a difference. The only thing thats going to fix it is training. If they've let it go on this long then I doubt they are going to start caring. The dog probably doesn't get much exercise either... or stimulation- other than barking at your dog....
Maybe someone else will chime in with a more positive outlook!

Give them a link to the bark collar that leerburg sells?
http://leerburg.com/tritronics.htm
Maybe the owners are sick of it as well, since you know they are frustrated.... it could be they are ready to take the next step to make it stop as well. If all else fails, you can complain to the humane society (likely an unproductive step, if your humane society is anything like the local one we have)

I have a "barker" across the street, in a fenced yard; & although I feel sorry for the dog, as it does seem to be the only interaction, activity this dog has; I just ignore & think of it as distraction training for my dog, as she ignores & doesn't react, as she should!

You don't mention what kind of a relationship you have with the neighbors. If they are people you can talk to, I would try that approach and explain that the barking is really stressing both your dog and you, and could they please bring him inside when they hear him barking excessively.
Then you might mention the possibility of a no-bark collar. Maybe they don't even know such devices exist. It sounds like they are annoyed by the barking, too, and if they are not willing to take the time to properly train their dog, the collar may be an attractive option to them.
If they are not amenable to any of your suggestions, then I would check into your local city or township ordinances and see if there is anything about nuisance barking or some other noise ordinance. If there is, maybe a report to the police would motivate them.
If all else fails, I guess you can always consider a solid wood privacy fence, though I understand that would be quite an expense and may not deter the dog anyway, if he can hear you and your dog outside.

Only thing that worked for us was a privacy fence and calling the township on them...good luck!

SO many dogs with no training at all.
One summer, caring for aging relative, I lived in a small town in Nebraska. My IG and I would walk after supper, after the patient went to bed.
There were maybe 25 labs in this small town, in every case isolated in a "run". I never met another sole walking their dog in 2 months, never saw anyone play with their dog. Those dogs all barked like crazy.
Maybe your neighbor could get into some marker training. Labs are smart -- maybe they have a child who could get into it. "See if you can teach your dog to do this" sort of thing.

On a related note, any suggestions for approaching neighbors whose dogs bark constantly (and are out in all but the nastiest weather), when the neighbors think the constantly barking dogs make them safer and more secure. I don't follow their logic, since a dog that barks at everything (at all hours) is not much better at alerting to danger than a dog who barks at nothing.
I already suggested the tritronics bark collars, since the couple are elderly and I don't think they could even walk the dogs safely, but they want the dogs out there barking. The problem is, it sometimes wakes my kids (4 & 2), and with another baby on the way, I don't need anything that interferes with our sleep.
So far we've been polite, but how do I approach someone who doesn't see this as a problem?

Call Animal Control. They'll give you your local 'quiet time' hours. Every time the dogs bark in this window, I'd call. They are not being respectful kind neighbors. http://www.cityoftacoma.org/Page.aspx?nid=490 Here is a link from my city. Just an example- I googled 'Tacoma WA, excess dog barking'
I'd start making calls, since it sounds like you've tried to handle it the nice way.
Poor dogs. They sound like they need a friend, and some EXERCISE.
