My dog's getting a little big for his crate.
Saw a neat collapsible crate made of "space age materials" at the farm store.
Wondered what other's experiences are with these soft crates.
Dog is 16 months, crate broke. Would be for home use.
I used to have one for Nico for when we traveled, and she used to sleep in it out of choice.. but she is exceptionally well behaved.
I loved it for her, being so big trying to lug around a normal crate would have been a nightmare.
I think it really depends on what the consequences will be if he manages to rip a whole in the side. Is he trustworthy enough to spend a free afternoon in the house?
Mine are the X Series, which they don't even make anymore, but supposedly were a step up in quality from the N2 series. As far as I can tell, there's not a lot of difference. The main reason I bought mine was so I could carry them to obedience trials easier than the metal ones, but I wouldn't hesitate to use them at home if I was still using crates.
Setting up and dismantling them took a little practice. It's pretty easy, but you have to fold the poles just so. You also don't want to set anything heavy on top of these.
The most important thing is that your dog is thoroughly crate broke, because I think any dog could rip one of these to shreds if it was determined to get out.
By space age materials, I mean it's not cotton/canvas, some form of plastic, not nylon, some "other"-- seems quite strong.
The model I saw pops open like a laundry hamper and was very cheap and light.
It looked like a great idea.
I've see the pop-up laundry basket type crates rolling around like tumbleweeds (with the dogs in them) at our training club. Not the best unless the dog is rock solid in the crate.
The brand was "Day Tripper" - about $30.00 for a pretty large size. So light, and had no real floor.
I am thinking if the dog did some scratching around as they do prior to lying down the crate might be rolling all over as you describe. It could be like a cat in a pillow case.
I was curious if people had tried these for home use.
I have a different makers soft sided crate for my puppy. Mine has a velcro attached floor that got figured out really quickly. As long as I leave the door up and she chooses to go in everything is fine. If I close the door she is out in seconds.
So I have to agree your dog would have to be very solidly crate trained before I would even think about getting one. I definitely wouldn't start there. And I see that isn't your situation but added for others who might be reading this.
For your situation where your dog is used to a crate I still wouldn't go with a model without a solid floor because all it would take is one little distraction and he would be out. I do think they have their purpose though. Mine is used for shade from the Arizona sun when I take her to the park or out someplace I believe she will need some shade and quiet time.
