Hello everyone,
I trust all is well.
This is my first post. Glad to be here.
I just signed my first client with a blind dog. Dog is a 10m old yellow lab mix, and have been blind all his life. The way he plays and activity level is absolute normal. (Runs into a wall bounces corrects course and keeps running.)
Any ideas, pointers, mistakes to avoid information you can share will be greatly appreciated. Since I'm new to the board I don't know who is who So if what you're sharing is something you've never done, but heard from someone please specify.
Thank you in advance for your time and help.

Changing "bling" to "blind" in title.

Welcome, Turk. You'll want to post an intro here:
http://leerburg.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/postlist/Board/146/page/1
Basic obedience is the plan? We will need more info: Are you planning on marker training (a good idea)? Has the owner ever had a blind dog? Have you? (I ask you this because there are non-training hints about living with a blind dog, too.)
Have you done marker training? (The differences with a blind dog aren't huge. For example, the lure for the first "sit" is aromatic, and held a little closer, so the dog is following its path over his head by scent.)
Is the dog new to the owner or has s/he had him since young puppyhood? (I ask because it will tell us whether the paths to the food bowl and the potty door and so on have been defined or not.)
So .... yep, we can help, but we need more info.
PS
Does the dog have eyes open and intact? (I ask because of the small issue to be aware of that some folks run into with blind dogs who inadvertently "stare" at a reactive dog in what the other dog may perceive as a challenge.)

Done it. Two in the past and one in progress.
There are several members here who have experience with training blind dogs.
Much of it, though, is not very different from marker work with sighted dogs.

Thanks Connie,
I have done marker training before. The owner had the dog from a pup. Dogs eyes are both open, but one is full of fleshy thing other looks like a lazy eye. Owner said in dog parks dogs will either be OK with him or just attack him.

I would keep that dog out of any situation with off leash dogs around- way too much risk, IMO.

Never in a million years should a blind dog be in a loose-strange-dogs situation. The owner was badly misguided if the dog was exposed to off-leash dog parks.

Basic obedience is the plan?
The marker work, except for the scent lure (when you use a lure), is pretty much the same as with a sighted dog. I'd start loading your marker.
Does the dog know his way around OK? Does the owner know about essential oils (like vanilla and lemon, say) to scent certain pathways .... one to warn, one to lead?
Have you watched either of these?

Just on a side note, if you think the owners would be willing, and could possibly afford it - you might want to mention the possibility of them just getting the eyes removed. He isn't using them anyway, and besides causing potential issues with other dogs, they might cause him health problems, and pain in fact, at some point.
