I noticed a spot on Dom's upper lip on Monday. It doesn't seem like its changed at all since I noticed it. Not getting better or worse, that is. He hasn't been doing any more or less chewing than normal. No new toys or anything. I'm wondering if he could have scraped it on bite sleeve. The sleeve and pillows he trains on are jute, which is pretty rough. He was hitting up off the ground- I wonder if he scraped it from coming in hard.
Should I put anything on it? I imagine he'll just lick it off again.
Have you ever seen a sore like this from bitework?

Well, I'd watch that very carefully, including measuring and recording it (or photographing it daily) because it's so hard to tell when you see it all the time if it has changed. If it hadn't started healing in a day or two, I'd probably want it looked at.
Maybe Dr. Betty could weigh in ....

It looks like road rash to me. Chula gets similar sores (not on her mouth though) from scraping the ground when she's catching her flying squirrel...
What Connie said...

Acne or an ingrown hair/ folliculitis after trauma from
the jute-- I'm not familiar with biting-for-sport injuries. My son's English Bulldog would get that type of thing often, usually on the chin. That was hygiene related. Washing his food dish more often would help to control it.
If you have a club that you go to and lots of dogs are biting on this sleeve, maybe see if others have lesions. This kind of thing can be staph inf. (like impetigo in kids from the pool, or sometimes wrestlers get these lesions from the mats).
If I saw it in others I'd suggest washing this sleeve, or spraying it with a dilute clorox solution and setting it in the sun.
I think the sore will go away on its own. It does not look like something which needs antibiotics or skin scraping etc. at this point.

That is biig for a folliculitis result, isn't it? Maybe I have seen all particularly small ear-flap folliculitis.
It looks big for a pimple too. (Pugs and a couple other breeds I know are prone to muzzle-zits, but this looks so big .... maybe I am seeing it too close. Got a pic that shows it in relation to the whole face?)
But I would definitely take my experience a far-distant second to Dr. Betty's and just go with " ... measuring and recording it (or photographing it daily) because it's so hard to tell when you see it all the time if it has changed. If it hadn't started healing in a day or two, I'd probably want it looked at."

I really only did about 2 yrs of pet medicine, and that was 15 yrs ago, so everything I say should be taken with a grain (or block!) of salt..
I might put a little neosporin/polymyxin/bacitracin/( with or without dexamethazone) type ointment on there-like an eye ointment. He will lick it off pretty quick, but it might speed healing if it's some sort of abrasion.
You mentioned how cold it is - could he have put his lip on something metal
and pulled a little skin off?

I'm leaning towards the scrape theory after inspecting closely. Its rather flat, when you touch it, it feels like a little nick. There's no bump, no swelling, and it looks like its starting to heal. There's a slight ring of pinker, healthier skin around the outside. You can kinda see it in the pic. Its a small spot relative to his snout. Maybe a little smaller than the eraser on a pencil.
Going to do my best to keep it clean between meals. I guess we'll go from there.
