It's been freezing here and extremely dry (if it's going to be this cold I think it should be law that there should be snow -_- *grumbles)
Ryuk's been loving it as he loves the cold weather. However I'm a little concerned about the cold wind and his ears. We're outside roughly an hour at a time 2-3 times a day training/playing. His ears are ICE cold to the touch when he comes in. They don't seem to hurt or anything, they're not particularly numb, and there's no discoloration or signs of damaged but they are freezing cold to the touch. I know in the cold circulation in the farthest reaches decreases to keep the important torso stuff warm. Should I be worried about his ears? He has only a "velvet" layer of fur on his ears so they're not well protected.
Should I be concerned or am I worrying for no reason?

I wouldn't worry. I've run my shepherd for 2-4 hours in down to -10 F, with no problems. We just finished a 2 hour, 17 mile run/ski in 5 F, and she seemed very frisky.
I love how they get that sheen of frozen vapor on their whiskers and ruff when running in the cold.
If it got below, say -20 or so I might be a little more concerned about those upright shepherd ears, but even then, I'm betting they'd do just fine.
-20 with wind chill and blizzard conditions, that would be a concern, but I'm not tough enough to go out long in that kind of weather anyway.

I've seen frostbite on ear tips of non-arctic type dogs here in Minnesota, like Basset hounds, coonhounds, daschunds.
The hair turns white in a few months, and the skin gets little cracks.
We recommended a heavy layer of vaseline, though I am not sure if that really helped much.

They get all excited if you say the word "snow"
Heck, I get all excited when someone says "snow"! Jamie, I agree, it should have to snow when it's below 20 degrees, just as a rule.

Ya, but that would be for an extended amount of time, not just an hour or so, right?

Definately, a long time outside, and Minnesota cold, like 20 below. Coonhounds chained to their barrels with inadequate straw bedding. It's pretty common in barn cats around here- one ear usually, the cat curls up into a ball, one ear sticks up.

Some people shouldn't own dogs.

And Yes, it doesn't look good for this early in the winter and I am about 300 miles or so north of you. We just started getting estimates for an indoor training building...
