Hi,
This is my first post. I started feeding raw/4 yr old golden retriever recently, everything is going great, however he will vomit early in the am if i don't feed him really early in the morning. for example even if i try not to feed him until 7:30 or 8:00 pm, he will wake me up anywhere between 3:30 am & 5:00 am to eat, i would try to make him wait by giving him an apple or a carrot but still about an hour after eating that he'll come to me again & i've noticed if i don't feed him (something)& try to wait another hour or two, he will throw up (bile) i was told in the past that this could happen due to his digestive juices get flowing & he needs to eat. So because i don't want my dog throwing up every morning, i've had to feed him at 4:15am, 4:30 am or 5:00 am & that's a long time to wait to eat his dinner at 7:30 or 8:00 pm & he is starving by then (& acts like it too). so sometimes at lunch time i will give him a chicken thigh & then feed him @ 7:00 OR 7:30 PM. I've also tried feeding him a bigger portiong @ the pm feeding but that time he got up at 3:30 am.
Any advice on how to work this out so he is not vomiting in the am or is this just the way it is?
Thanks so much!

No no, you can fix it. From what you say, it's just empty-stomach vomiting, and several dogs on here (and others I know) need a bedtime snack to avoid it. So I'd just save some of the supper for a bedtime snack.

I think others will join the thread, too, because it's not uncommon.

Not uncommon at all. Spitting up that clear/yellow bile is almost always (in my experience) a result of having gone too long without food in the stomach. A bedtime snack is the trick. That's when mine get their daily dollop of yogurt. Even just that much food in the stomach will hold mine over til breakfast.
My dog has this issue so I took the opportunity to double up on the positive effects.
Every morning I make him a Kong filled with French-cut, no-salt beans and plain lowfat yogurt. I fill in both ends with a good wad of peanut butter and throw it in the freezer for the day. Sometimes I'll even sneak a sardine in there for an extra little treat.
Later, at the end of the day, he gets his Kong with everything frozen inside. Not only does it put something in his stomach, but it's soothing for him to lay there and work at getting the food out. Then he's all nice and mellow for bedtime

I've been doing it for years now, too. Never thought of what Kristel does, but I like that idea. Some nighttime exercise and busy-ness of the not-wiring-up type.
