This isn't meant to offend anyone so if you celebrate something other than Christmas, insert your own holiday title. Do you guys buy gifts for your dogs? If so, what is Santa bringing them this year? I am ordering tons of chew proof toys for our maligator and I'm still looking for a durable bed. How else do you celebrate with your dog? I'm thrilled that Vader gets to go stay with us at my in-laws and isn't being banished to the boarding facility He will have to deal with two very out of control schnauzers, but besides that it should be fun and we can't wait!
My family is all out of town and although they wouldn’t mind the drive here, we don’t have the room. I don’t like driving the treacherous winter roads at Christmas simply to get together and celebrate (I know, bah hum bug). I’ve told my mom, if she really loves me, she won’t make drive in the dangerous condition and I don’t want them driving either. Webcams and mikes bring us together though and we pretty much celebrate Christmas in July when RV’s and tents can be brought up.
We’ve had a bit of a tradition the past 10 or so years. After I put the turkey in (strange, one thing I can cook fairly decently) we head out for a special hike early in the morning. The lake is about an hour away and it’s about a 3 hour march, in generally deep snow. The boys (and us) are exhausted and usually home by 11:00. They get a special treat (once a year) of a big bowl of milk and a bit of honey and a 10 lb turkey is defrosted just for them (you can get some pretty good deals this time of year – got this year’s for 1.39 a lb). They get great chewies after their mid day nap (this year is bully sticks and tripe chews). I’m ordering some great new toys so once our local friends arrive, they’ll be filled with cheese chunks, kibbles and liver treats for their entertainment.
After dinner, we head out for a group walk around the neighborhood before the tryptophan kicks in and the boys will come home to their dinner and crates. The rum and egg nog should be flowing pretty good by that time and hopefully everyone will stumble home at a reasonable hour.
Aaron, I was just talking to a friend about trying to figure out what to get her kids Christmas after 8 days of gifts already.
Ripley's got several gifts wrapped already, not that he doesn't know where and what they are. I've been really tempted to adopt another dog lately, but I know better than to do it this time of year.
Our Christmas list always includes the kids. We always get them at least one new toy and treat each and place it in their stocking (they actually have a bone shaped stocking with their picture on it ). Then on Christmas morning we open our gifts and I place their's on the floor and watch them try and get their new toys out. One year we even placed it in a gift bag as if it was a regular gift not a good idea though...they kept going in all of the bags looking for more bones . Once the toys are out we go outside for some play time and come in for some rest and our treats . Our neighbor brings over a little goodie bag for them too so they get all sorts of spoiled on Christmas. It is always a blast!
The dogs always get new toys and bones... so when I buy things I have to get them in sets of 5 This will be Tyra's frist Christmas with us (and not in a kennel outside) so I am curious to see how she reacts.
The dogs also get their own plate of food, and I make a special salad for all 3 horses.
I generally spend a few hours at my Aunt's house with the rest of the family, but I relish the time I spend alone with the dogs. This year, Paul is working nights Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so the girls and I will watch A Christms Story (over and over) and munch on tasty treats
I am actually hoping it snows Christmas Eve so I can have an excuse to just stay home. With all of the snow, I think a day of snowshoeing with the dogs would be devine!! Shhhh...that's just our secret though, my Aunt would kill me if she heard that!!!
