I have been wondering this for a while, and I finally got around to posting it. Tobias, my german shorthaird pointer (15month old). Shakes his head all the time when I go to give him a command. After he shakes his head, and I repeat the command he will do it. I have reecently had his ears check, they were cleaned and there was no infection of any kind. So I know that is not a problem. Is this just a weird quirk of his or is this a form of dominance for him?
My dogs shake their heads when they pause from hard playing. Almost like a calming signal. One will do it, then the other. It's consistent enought to be predictable.
If your sure his ears are free of infection/yeast (can really be an issue with these floppy eared guys, we have an english pointer and wipe out her ears at least weekly) ..... then it sounds like a stress response to me. Are you marker training with him?
I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable leerburg people will drop by and respond, but thats my opinion.

Hey guys,
I have been wondering this for a while, and I finally got around to posting it.
Could I ask how recently his ears were checked? If you look inside, up close, do you see any redness or smell any odor? Any debris?
Connie, his ears were checked last week, at the vet. And I just checked again, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with his ears...no redness or the brown goop he gets in there, or smell.
He is being marker trained, and takes to it quite well...he is a very food motivated dog.
I was watching him for the last little bit, and he really seems to do it when he is asked to sit. It doesn't seem to matter either if he has his prong collar on or not. He doesn't have any hip problems either, but he doesn't like to sit either. He doesn't do it every time either, so I am wondering if it stressed induced. Is there a way to help that or fix that?
Tobias mostly shakes his head when asked to sit, and its not every time. Usually when we come in from outside, or he is asked to sit and wait. There are times when we are out for a walk, and and it looks like he is trying to shake down his collar. It's a vigorous shake. When we go out for our walks he has his prong collar on, other than he has a flat collar on, that sits really low on his neck.
