If you want to stay with grain free Natures Instinct, Wellness CORE and Solid Gold Barking at the Moon are all kibbles I've used that my dogs have done well with.
Or you could just go raw all the way and use something like HK Preference if you want to make sure you've got all the bases covered.
Orijen is a good food, if your dog can handle the extremely high level of protein. My last GSD ate it, but my current pup can't tolerate it. He eats Taste of the Wild (lamb formula), which I am very happy with. I've noticed that they have 2 simple formulas (the lamb one, and the fish one) and 2 richer ones (the wetlands, and the bison, which actually has chicken, lamb, fish, egg, bison and venison). So I would say stick with it, if it works for your dogs. Do you have a link to the articles?
Those links are about an aflatoxin recalls in other foods (which have grain), and various other issues people have with the food. I know there was also a recall on the fish diet for a moisture issue and animals not eating it. But, can you post links to specific articles that state the problems you have? Then maybe we can help you find something that would suit your preference.
How were your dogs doing on the food? FYI Solid Gold is also owned by Diamond.
Orijen and grain free Acana are good. So are GO! and NOW!, but these are all very rich and high in protein and known to cause diarrhea in some dogs.
Well, to be honest, you can never really know for sure. Those recalls involved grain, and your food is grain free - this is a major point.
Another point in that article was suggesting the harmfulness of animal by-products in food, which premium kibbles don't use anyway.
I think you should feed whatever your dogs do best on, and that should be your primary reason for choosing it.
If you really wanted to go with a company that does ridiculous amounts of quality control and scientific testing on all their foods, to an unbelievable extent - feed them Medi-cal from the vet. Yes, corn is the first ingredient, but if you are worried about potential recalls in the future, my money would be on them for a "safe" product.
side note: Connie, if you are reading this, Medi-cal recently flooded our clinic with a bunch of info about why corn is so great. If you haven't seen it, it may be on their website if you are interested. If not, I might be able to get you a link.
I use Artemis. They have a grain free that I had them on but once cold weather hit and their work was cut by probably 75%, it got to be too rich for them so Ive switched them over to Power Formula. http://artemiscompany.com/retailer_state.asp?page=3&state=PA
