i have a 15 month old boxer.today was my first trip to the dog run with him.there was another dog there it was a golden retreiver and as soon as my dog saw it he strated smackin it with him paw and knockin it down.he wasnt biting or anything like that he was just playing but he wouldnt leave this poor dog alone.at first i grapped him and calmed him down a bit but he went right back at the dog.even when the other dog layed down he would just put him paw on it.i asked the other dogs owner if i should leave she said no, but i could tell she was annoyed. so my question is this should i correct his behavior when he does this and how.cause he wanst listining to me at all when the other dog was around and will he get better if i keep bringing him around other dogs.cause im scared one day a dog might try to bite him when he does this.cause he just doesnt stop.
Chris,
I'm certainly no expert but here's my take on the situation. It seems like he's not being aggressive but he is being rude. Eventually he will run into the dog who doesn't appreciate it, and the other dog will correct him. I would not worry too much about his play behaviour but I would correct him for not listening.
Chris,
Obedience is the solution to your problem. It sounds like you were at a doggie park. There is a concensus on this board that parks are bad. I for one only take my dog to a park for limited time periods when there are few dogs out and I am using the other dogs to train for distraction. Your dog needs to learn that you dictate appropriate playmates. Also, don't underestimate the value of a solid recall. This will prevent your dog from being a pest to others.
Sounds to me like your dog was demonstrating his dominance over the other. The fact that the other dog laid down showed that it accepted your dog's higher status and was not going to challenge it.
I agree with John, but I don't allow my dogs to express dominance because of what Pamela said. Although dominance in and of itself is not aggression, it ofter leads to aggression.
Chris, the comments you made are some of the exact reasons most of the people here, myself included, don't go to dog parks/runs. I would NEVER let my dogs interact with a dog they didn't know. that's asking for trouble. You never know when the other dog, or yours, will trigger aggression and few "dog park" folks have a clue how to stop a dog fight. If there are more than a couple of loose dogs there, you can be gauranteed of a real disaster cause the S#!+ WILL hit the fan. My "cute" little JRT will try to eat the face off of any strange dog that sticks his nose in his A$$, and I don't blame him. I'll eat the face off of anyone who allows their dog to do this. Another gaurantee. Someone in the middle of the mess will have a brother, sister, etc that's a lawyer.
