I trained my first retrieve probably 50 yrs ago. Effective, yes, pretty ,no. I've also read about, seen and tried many different methods. Many good, many not so good.
Michael Ellis's Retrieve DVD is as good as it gets.
I've yet to see or hear anyone explain the how and why of each step of ANY training procedures as well and Ellis does.
He answered questions I never even thought of asking.
There have been a number of discussions with retrieve questions here lately and Michael Ellis answered all of them "plus"!
Thanks to LB gift certs for Christmas I've also got the Heeling and the Jumps DVD but from the wife's look at me when I hinted to it, I don't think New Year's eve will be the time to watch them.
ps
Anyone that wants to see a dog and handler that really enjoy each other and what they do together need look no further then Cindy and Rush in any of these DVDs.
If there is a definition of team work in the dictionary it will have a pic of Cindy and Rush.
......and this is not a paid advertisement!
Agree 100% - and the fact that it is relevant to someone with your level of experience (Connie says several eon's worth) as well as a neophite like myself - speaks volumes on ME's ability to teach/train. It is absolutely a wonderful video... but all of his are.
I think teaching the retrieve was the hardest thing I had to do, Erika did not naturaly want to do it, a little compulsion was involved and it's still sloppy for competition. I should of skipped eating for awhile and got the ME vid
A real eye opener for me was the very FIRST step to the retrieve. With most back chaining it starts by physically holding the dog's mouth around the dumbell. With Michael's method he goes back a step further and and marker trains just holding the muzzle.
So fricking simple and right in front of our eyes...yet!
Dennis, if you only knew how many terriers I literally wrestled to the ground over the retrieve. Talk about not natural retrievers.
I think I'm going to have to stop eating for a bit, like Dennis suggested, and go ahead and get this one. Koenig's retrieve is functional. Thats it. Sloppy, silly, bouncy, big ol' wide circle around the dumbell kind of sloppy. Not pretty, not tight. Generally fast, but thats as many positives I can find!
Yes Bob! The first step makes such perfect sense. I love my ME dvd's.
I watched, looked at my retired gsd and said "this will be fun"... in a few short sessions had him "bringing" gift bags around the house for Christmas. Too fun, and no chewing...!
