Basie is a wonderful, sweet dog; however, when we allow him off leash in the yard while we are there, he gets into the "play stance", barks, jumps at you, nips (teeny, tiny). We have tried many attempts at correction, including "no" (to which he responds in all other situations), "leave it", etc, but to no avail. Shall we try an e-collar? I'm thinking he would have no idea why he feels uncomfortable when he does this behavior...I am picturing us saying "no", and if he does not stop, do whatever it is one does with an e-collar...Clearly, i need to research how they work, etc. I forgot to tell you, he's a pure bred Doberman.

Edit reason: Add dog's breed
Sorry for the delay...I have been sick since the first. He has been to puppy classes, spent time at a trainers (10 days...would never do that again...he uses the choke collar, does not believe in marker training which we have come to appreciate and are learning it. Basie gets a lot of exercise...to the beach daily on a flexi and runs in our large yard once or twice daily. We spend a lot of time with him. He just did it this morning, and we are becoming concerned that he may bite....he is like a different animal when this is happening. I am going to research e-collars...don't know what else to do. If we put him on a long lead with prong and give him some freedom and then he starts, yes, we can give him a correction, but he will know when the prong is on or not. I am completely at a loss....
I will be of very little help, but I have a dobe about the same age. He does the same. He ahs NO drive for balls or other things but that. I leave a 6 to 12 feet line on him when I don't want to play. When I play this game with him, I take the line off and go right in his space and get him to jumps back ward and get very firm about him not touching me. He sometime go for a crazy run aroud the house or car. I say done at the end and put the line back on if he is still not calming down.
I do that play once a day plus all the other stuff (ob and walk)
Correct me if I'm wrong guys... but Sounds a bit like he isn't getting enough exercise to fully tire him out. I would add some more structured walks or start to add a weighted vest/backpack to help burn energy. Work on your recall command and until he is more reliable I wouldn't allow him to be off leash at all. A long drag line would be really helpful. I am sure connie and the others will have some more or better ideas but that's just my opinion
