On the back of the bag it says about 4&1/2 cups for a 100 + pound dog ,if I feed him two times a day do I split that amount up or give him that amount each meal. I was feeding raw but he got real sick and his transition back to raw just resulte
d in him throwing up every time he ate
1- the bag often over-estimates how much food a dog needs. They want you to feed more, so you'll buy more. The bag is just a starting point, you adjust the amount based on how much the dog weighs, from there.
2- most dog people with bloat-prone dogs feed two meals a day. I personally do not, but twice a day seems to be the preferred approach.
3- what'd the vet say made him sick? Were you, or are you, mixing kibble and raw?
The vet said maby a some type of gastral infection or something but couldent realy find what was causing him to vomit for 4 days straight about 4 times a day,and it smeeld like stool ,he was on a raw diet from when he was a puppy
When he got sick I was feeding him cooked chicken, rice and caned pumpiken, than he stoped geting sick so I started adding raw back and he would just throw it up an hr after he ate or in the morning.
So I went and bought a bag of blue bufflao wilderness and for 3 days he seems fine no vomiting just was wondering on the amout to give 2 times daily.
The amount on the bag is the total amount to be fed each day.
If you're feeding twice a day, split that amount between the two feedings (2.25 cups per feeding, based on the 4.5 cups a day).
Blue bufflao wilderness chicken they have a salmon and a duck one ,so ill try switching it up for him. And they have a large breed dog food maby a 35 poulnd bag for the same price so maby I cam mix that with it aswell to strech it out a bit.
I actually wouldn't go by "cups" because every food is different, and the food manufacturers print the estimates for "highly active/working" dogs (so that you buy more food, and so that they could never be held liable for suggesting you feed too little).
I find this calorie calculator to be very helpful. On the back of the bag, it will state how many calories are in a cup, and you can feed accordingly.
