Hi Everyone,
Its been a while since Ive been on here, but I have a question for you now.
Kane is a 3 year old Neutered GS . He is fed raw, and hes is basically a farm dog, although Ive been attending a local Schutzhund club, and am intending on trying to do a BH in May.
Heres the issue... He just stinks!!! We were giving him deer meat from our friend who gave us his scraps and bones.Could it be the deer meat? I caught him bringing home horse manure around the same time(,and Llama manure Nice frozen chunks) , but Ive stopped him from that now.
I have him back on pork with some vegetables and plain yogurt. and am getting some tripe today.(His normal meal is chicken quarters, tripe and vegetable.
Is the smell related to the cold weather? He has never smelled like this in previous years.

Being a farm dog, I would imagine he gets into lots of smelly things. Is he a messy eater?
It might just be time for a bath.
But there are certain health issues that it could also be.
What is the smell like? Is his skin/coat greasy at all?
Yeast issues can smell bad, and usually accompany a greasy feeling on the skin/coat.
His diet is obviously a good one and healthy. Do you have him on salmon oil or some kind of fish body oil and Vit. E?

Can you go a little further into what would be included in his raw diet maybe on a weekly basis?
Just trying to get a feel about variety and makeup of the diet as a whole
Also, does her get any supplements? Fish oil, Vitamin E, Joint support type things?

Thanks for your comments,
Joyce,He is not a messy eater, I probably wont bath him till summer as its going to be -30 c next week, It smells a bit like vomit or poop( the day I found him with feces, he did vomit in his crate that night and I found a little stone in the vomit. but his stool are normal and he hasn't vomited since)His coat is shiny and
not greasy, no dander, I keep him groomed no fleas or anything like that.Niomi,Typical daily diet : either a chicken quarter, or pork with bones or beef that we butchered with beef rib bones sometimes a soup bone, along with 1/2 - 1 can of tripe, sometimes a banana, leftover veg from our supper, sometimes egg and yogurt,He also gets fish oil every day.
thanks for the input

Well having the poop and vomit on him is definitely not helping the smelly situation and unless this is an ongoing problem, I would say that they are the cause.
What you could try (believe me, I know the cold thing, it's going to -30 next week here too) is the waterless shampoo or in a pinch I do a 60/40 water/vinnegar mixture and mist onto the coat after a really good grooming to take all the dead hair and any wierd "chunks" out.
Also check the ears to make sure there is no ear infection that can also be a source of "gross" smell.

For a one time thing, I'd just hit up the local groomers.
In the winter, it's worth the expense. GSDs can just get downright stinky, and trying to wash them during the winter is a nightmare.
Just getting them clean is a challenge because their winter coat is so thick, but then getting them DRY! Oh lord.

here's what I do, does two jobs in one, take a garden hose and attached it to the drain of the hot water heater and run the hose out side, since its at the bottom all that will come out is warm water, you can use that to wash your pupper and flush out your hot water heater at the same time. I'd do it on the first above feezing day if you can and keep him inside until he's dried off.

I know Joyce addressed yeast too, but just to reinforce:
Check the armpits, undercarriage, and paws for odor. Is he itchy? Does he show any signs of waxy-looking skin? Thickening or darkening of skin?

Hi Thanks,
Connie, Just brushed him, feet arm pits underside all good ears dont smell just near his face and front. Could be the old vomit although that was three weeks ago and hes been brushed alot since. Teeth good eyes good hes happy, he does get itchy on his haunches but hes always been that way. After you pet him your hands smell. Does he need to be looked at?
