I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good tough toy. I like the look of the frisbee type toys on Leerburg and am looking for input as to how they stand up.
Has anyone used to LED collar tags? I like the idea of being able to see the dogs when they are out in the yard at night.
Most any frisbee type toy won't last long it the dog is allowed to chew on it/play with it on their own.
I use the Chuckit Flying Squirrels with my dogs. They love those things!! I use them for throw (90% of play) and tugging (10% of play) they tend to last 6-8 months here. I keep about 4 in rotation.
Kong Frisbees are also a pretty heavy duty toy - probably a bit more so than the Squirrels. But my dogs love the squirrels and they last well for us so I stick with those.
If he's just mouthing it, then I think both those frisbee toys could work out pretty well for you. Regular frisbees last maybe a dozen throws if we're lucky because my dogs bite down on and break them when they catch them.
The squirrel is fine for my Dobe, but my Saint played tug with me and I came up with only half in my hand! He is such a beast with anything he gets a hold of. Not to mention no one wants it back after he's done with it.
Don’t mean to be a party pooper here but you really shouldn’t be playing tug with a Flying Squirrel or Frisbee. They’re retrieving toys.
I know what the big guys can be like though. In their jolly, saliva oozing exuberance, if they really want it, you’re not getting it back in one piece. You need to outsmart them and train the behavior you’re looking for. I would suggest a second one to begin with, until he gets the hang of bringing it back in one piece. Speed up his return by holding up the second one. Instead of playing “keep away” or “tugging” for the prized possession in his mouth, he’ll most likely drop it. Toss the second and repeat. They catch on pretty quick.
If he’s really into chasing and chewing, I can’t recommend these fun balls enough: http://leerburg.com/1109.htm . Put a few treats in it, give it a little toss and they’ll play with it for hours. I just got the fireplug and treat ball too. We just got back from a hike and they’re all enjoying one right now.
I really like the Kong Frisbees that Mara also suggested. They have a new heavy duty (black) one too but the regular red one works fine for us. You kind of have to expect a bit of wear and tear with the powerful jaws that are gripping it on pretty steady basis, but I’ve had mine for about six or seven months and it still works fine. These are really easy to grip and light to toss too.
As for the lights, I haven’t got the collars I want yet but these little guys are sure doing the trick for us: http://leerburg.com/1201.htm . There’s something about the way they’re made and hang that makes them visible all the time. I’m really impressed. And look at the price. You just can’t beat it.
