So I just recently started working as a Vet Tech again, at a new clinic.
Thus far, I am VERY impressed with the quality of medicine that is practiced. Very pro-active, and extremely open to non-traditional ideas/remedies.
Except for yesterday. A new client brought in her pup, apx 12 week old Maltese mix. The previous owner had reported the pup already had 3 sets of a 6in1 vax. (So even for traditional vax rules, this is TOO MUCH, TOO EARLY. No one really knows if this pup got any vax or not, the prior owner didn't show any proof, and said they did it at home. Didn't even give dates)
The vet opted to start the puppy over on vaccines. She's going to receive an additional 3 shots of DHPPC. I'm pretty sad. I was really hoping he'd go ask the owner if she wanted to get some titer levels on her pup before shooting her up with more vaccines.
Oh well.

Would you mind asking your employer what would be sufficient enough proof of prior vaccination? I ask because I have 5 1/2 week old puppies here, and although I am giving strict instructions about the vaccines they will have received here, and what/when to vaccinate when they take them home, it wouldn't be a surprise to have a vet try to tell them that I am a moron and they must start over.
I've planned my vax protocol very carefully, using separated vaccines. ie: parvo only and distemper/adeno only
Thanks for any advice ahead of time!

When I send pups home (I also vaccinate myself) I give the owners instructions on what vaccines they have had, and what they will need after pickup. And I stress there is NO need to start over. One thing I explain is there is no "starting over" when a vaccine schedule has a cut off date. IE it's not 4 vaccines or 6 vaccines, it's vaccines every X weeks (I do 3-4 week intervals) until the pup is a certain age. The whole point of repeated puppy vaccines is to try to "hit" the pup with a vaccine as soon as the maternal antibodies it recieved wear off.
At the end of all that, if I feel the pup owner still might be swayed by their vet into over vaccinating, I give them a vaccine schedule that includes the stickers from the vials containing the vaccines I administered. So far that has been enough proof for any vet who questions it.

Thats exactly the point of vaccines. Pick up where Momma left off! (Which is why starting at 3 weeks does no good- Mom's antibodies are still on board and effective, to my understanding at that age.
THANK YOU for being a responsible breeder Kadi, and keeping records. That was kind of the base of my ranting post, even though most of it centered on my boss IMO over vaccinating. It's SO important to keep records of stuff like that. If the owner of this pup had dates at types of vaccines that were given we could have built off that, not started over.
Booo.

Most vaccines have peel and stick labels. I always stick them on a vaccine record for puppy people. Like Kadi said, that should be proof enough for any vet. If they want to "start over" they are just soaking you for money and don't give a crap about your pup. Find a new vet!

The ones I use have a lot number and date on the vial, but no peel-and-stick. Guess I will just provide as much info as possible (could even include a picture of the vials, I guess), and hope the puppy buyers have spines.
I'm beginning to believe that some pet vets intentionally overvaccinate to ensure life-long, frequent customers!!

In the vets defense, that type of pup sounds very typical of BYB or puppy mill pups. The small breed mixes are all the rage right now. In those situations the breeder is often not knowledgeable or responsible so who knows if the pups were vaccinated, or if the vaccine was stored properly so it was even effective.
Maybe that is where the vet is coming from.

It would have been proof enough for this vet. He may not have been satisfied with the dates of the vaccines, but anything would have been better then the info we were provided.
Yup, most have peel and stick labels. Every vet I've ever worked for keeps the label and stick it in the chart of the patient.
He opted to start over because of LACK of records. I was just disappointed that he didn't suggest the option of titers to this poor new owner.

Those are my thoughts exactly.
This poor pup is the shining example of a byb. Covered in fleas, maltese 'mix' (not declared what the mix is) and EXTREMELY base narrow canines. To the point she could barley get a mini-Zuke in her mouth to chew it! Terrible. This poor puppy is already an investment for her owner. Rather then coming in for tech apts to finish out the vaccine series, she gets to see the Vet every 3 weeks so he can check on her chompers.

This is exactly what happened to my eldest boy and I even had the records from the previous vet with the stickers from the vaccines and they still made the poor guy go through it again even though I only took him to get his last one, and about 2-3 weeks later is when he developed his horrible skin condition any chance it could be linked? I got him at 4 months.
