Did you administer it in the muscle or just under the skin? My vet told me just to do it under the skin, by his neck/shoulder area. But I just read you were supposed to inject into the muscle...now I am wondering if I just wasted all that I used? And I don't know how to give it in the muscle. Hoping someone can clarify for me.
Ok good! I read that also somewhere but never from a known or respected source. I've know intramuscular is more painful, I don't want it to do it that way if I don't have to.
subq is less painful ( in general).
It has slower absorption, so could potentially give longer duration of action.
Sometimes subcutaneous injections can cause a lump-but not a limp! You can get a limp( that lasts awhile!) with an injection in the wrong spot in the thigh.
Right now I am just doing it subq. And it seems very much like water in consistency. I don't know what guage needle I am using tho. With, Subq he doesn't even seem to notice when I give it to him.
I've always heard it should be given IM. (and always done it IM in horses, same as Anne )
Another note on giving injections. Use one needle to draw up your Adequan. Now, change the needle to a BRAND NEW one to administer, wether it's SQ or IM. They just don't make sharps like they used too, and those needles dull FAST. A new needle only costs $0.10 and it's totally worth it to me to save my pet, or someone elses that I'm vaccinating the extra pinch from a dulled point. You can use a large gage to draw up the Adequan, but if you're going to be giving vaccinations for a long time, (like with Adequan) I suggest using a 22 gage needle (most vet's call these kitten needles. You have to inject slower, due to the small size, but it's much more comfy for your pup!
Along Aaron's advice of warming your vial, if you can draw it up with a large gage needle, then just warm your preloaded syringe in your pocket (or bra) it's a lot faster. Ya just gotta make sure you've capped your needle well!
