Tonight I finally got the chance to sit down and watch the movie about Temple Grandin. Has anyone else watched it?
This woman is nothing short of amazing. She has done more for the humane treatment of cattle, and single-handedly, I might add.
What she went through just trying to get the cattle industry to listen to her. Despite her autism, she persevered through some really tough times. Her love of these animals seems to be what kept her trying until she got them to see her ideas. One could say it was actually because of her autism that lead her to see what no others could.
While her books were awe inspiring, I found the movie about her life just as much so. What a visionary, and a profoundly remarkable human being. I loved the movie a great deal.
Temple Grandin is just a magnificent person.
Lots of veterinarians and cowboys working at big feed yards saw the cruelty and the fear in the cattle and hated it, but no one could figure out how to "buck the culture" and make changes. The curved chute system is just brilliant because cattle want to get back to where they were, they want to follow each other single file, and you can't have them see the chute set up that's at the end when they are at the beginning. It took so much dog power, hot shots and screaming to get the cattle to move before the curved set ups.
Odd how a disability (autism) turned out to be such a gift in relief of suffering.

Temple was in the audience at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, and looked really excited and thrilled to get recognition from Claire Danes (who won a Golden Globe for the part). The audience gave her a standing O. She's way up there on my list of heroes.

Me too Tracy. I am so glad that the movie allows Temple to get the recognition she deserves for all she has done. But especially because it sheds light on autism that is much needed.
Especially during a time when she was so young, they didn't know very much about autism. Her accolades are two fold, with what she did for autism and what she did for making the cattle industry so much better, and more humane.
She is indeed one of my heroes as well.
Dana let me know what you think of the movie after you watch it.
I think you will really enjoy it!
If anyone is interested, I just watched the 5 part series of (10 minutes each) about Temple on youtube. Here's the first one, look for the following parts 2, 3 etc on the right of the column when on youtube for the remaining interviews. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46ycu3JFRrA
