I'm going the Ivan Balabanov route and doing circle tracks. This is the second one I've done with Danni. She was 2/3 through before I realized I could be filming it. Anyway, the track is poorly laid by me, the world's worst track layer. But we manage. And I think she's doing okay. Any input would be excellent
Sorry about the sun glare in the videos, and about my fingers in the second video. You'd think I noticed them, and moved them out of the way, but that was just luck. The whole screen was black from the glare for me and I was too busy watching my dog to really care what I was filming. It was more of an if I get it, awesome, if not, oh well.
So yeah, enjoy
Here, she is just going over a large part of the portion she has already done, looking for the very few remaining pieces of food she missed.

Here, she is doing the same thing, but finds the small part of the track she hadn't gotten to yet and you can really see what the whole thing looked like before I started filming, haha.

She looks great to me, Katie.
So, what are these circle tracks you speak of?

Thanks Michael She makes me look good, don't she
I'm still learning, and Ivan has some videos you can rent on his website. Basically, when you start with a circle track, there is no real beginning or end. So the dog can't try to rush to a jackpot at the end of the track, because it just gets back up on where it already was.
I also really like his advice to have your dog off leash or at least don't hold on to the leash. Don't direct the dog at all. When we're in a trial situation, we can't guide our dogs. So we need to teach them to solve their own puzzles from the beginning. That's why when she loses the track and walks off, I don't go get her and I don't point out any pieces. She'll find them.
Ana Kozlowsky knows waaay more than me. I hope she chimes in!

I've heard of that method and know someone local to me that starts all her dogs on it and swears by it. Since she has put a few FH's on dogs I'm not about to argue with her. <grin>
She looks good Kati, saw her using her nose and thought I saw some footstep to footstep tracking! I like the part when she looked up at you like "Hey mom, this is cool, free food"!
Now I'm off to investigate this, this looks a lot more fun then starting off on scent boxes and a small straight line!

I like the off leash idea, too. It is way too easy to use a little body English to make the dog go where you want them to. It would really help me, too, if I could talk somebody into making tracks for me so I wouldn't know anything, but where to start.

I would, but you live kinda far. And I'm terrible at it! Jessica Kromer introduced circle tracks to me a long time ago, but I just now started.
I tried the traditional FST with Conan, but I can't even walk in a straight line! Circles I can do
I think I need to put the food pieces closer together, to get her to FST.
And the weather has been warm. In the 70s. Too warm for me. I like 60s. But we certaintly don't ever have snow!

Danni looks very much the same Haydn did on his first tracks, only she's bigger and smarter

Anybody who is really interested would be much better off watching Ivan's videos.
This is a video of Haydn doing a circular track. I started making wider steps after that session.
My understanding is that circular tracks are used to teach good tracking behavior - methodical progress down the track in one direction, nose to the ground, working independently.
Haydn and I are currently doing gently curved (not too busy) tracks using my normal steps with beginning and end and will be working on article indication away from the track starting next week.
