Could my dogs high quality diet be causing anal gland issues? My GSD has had infected anal glands twice now and I just noticed today that my other dog is licking his but a lot. After taking a closer look I noticed that the area directly below his tail is quite swollen. I'm putting a call into the vet today to see about getting him in.
My husband is convinced it is their high protein diet. Could he be right?
Cicero (GSD) has normal poops. Vice's (the one with the swelling) poops are ever changing. Normally his first poop is normal followed by a second poop that is very soft. Then I can get it normal for a while then we get the occasional soft poops again. He's been like this since I got him a year ago.

When you say normal... is it solid and compact or slightly squidgy? Can you pick it up without leaving residue?
It might be worth considering changing foods until you find one that produces harder poop.
The protein level is not the issue, it may be a fibre issue or even a food intolerance. It may just not be the right food for them.
There are people far more experienced than I with food who will probably post later.
I am glad it is just an anal gland issue. My parents lab has never had an anal gland problem but had an infection once and has been fine since. I think the odds of both dogs having anal gland issues is rare. I would also look out for perianal fistulas, which is very common in GSD. I have posted a link for you in case you don't know what perianal fistulas are. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2111&aid=2921
Oh man! Thanks for the article Cassie. I really hope Cicero doesn't end up having this. I'm telling myself that the vet would have caught it if he did...and I will make sure to ask about this specifically when I take him in to have his anal glands expressed.
I hope that Vice's infection is a one time thing like your parent's dog.
