Couple of questions on length of food storage.
1) My current bottle of LB Salmon oil is almost empty and has lasted almost 4 months. I store it in the fridge, but am wondering now if 4 months is too long. Is there a way to tell when its gone bad?
2) I've occasionally fed some pretty "ripe" raw meat, maybe a week or so in the fridge before using. It does not seem to have any adverse effect. Anyone else feed the occasional aged meat?

Yes, my dog seems to prefer "aged" meat, or she tries to "age" it herself by burying!! I prevent the burying, as that just looks bad! But neither causes her problems!!
I am curious about the salmon oil question myself, as I had some, that was not refrigerated, that I wondered about!
Beautiful collie!! Had one as a teen, one of my mom's favorite breeds; & yes, about "Lassie Come Home", I was caring for in Indiana, when my mom lived in Michigan (she was in hospital at the time), well, even tho the dog knew me, he took off; my mom was heart sick, till one evening she heard something, & there was "Bobbie"! He was gone for quite some time, & had to travel over the toll road (?) to get home!
Remarkable dogs!

Occasionally I've fed the ripe sort of meat from the fridge and never saw any adverse reactions and the dogs seem to like it just fine, never fed it if it's really gone bad just sort of stinky off smelling!

1) Most bottles I've seen have a 3 month open to toss timeline. When it smells fishy it has oxydized and usually it means it's time to toss it.
2) I know some people who only stop feeding funky aged meat when they can't stomach being in the room with it. I personally follow a policy of erring on the side of caution and have decided if it's not fresh enough for me to eat I won't feed it to the dogs. I don't believe there is really a right/wrong answer to this, it's about what you feel comfortable doing.

I'm much more careful about fish oil than meat. Rancid oil is not just not as good -- it's a carcinogen.
It has a once-smelled-never-forgotten odor (unless it's in kibble, where the smell of rancid oil can be masked). To me it smells kinda like oil paint.
When in doubt with oil, MHO is "toss it."

PS
Fishy might not be the best adjective for rancid oil, because non-deodorized salmon oil does smell fishy, but in a good way.
I know what you mean, though, Melissa. There's an undercurrent of fishiness (in a bad way) to rancid oil.
I would say, if the oil smell has changed in any way, throw it out. Also if you smell and taste it and would not want it in your food, throw it out.
It should smell good.

I agree... there is a good fishy smell which to me smells like the ocean and then there a rancid fishy smell which burns the nose. When you can smell the decay, it's time to toss it.

Yes, its a 3 mo expire (recommended) on the Salmon Oil, but I believe this is when not fridged?
I could check smell against my new bottle for reference since I've never had the "pleasure" of smelling rancid fish oil.
Good to know about old meat being ok. I kinda thought that would be the case given the way nature equipped the digestive plumbing.

Oh, btw is there a noticable color or opacity change in Salmon oil when its gone bad?
For example does it get cloudy or lose its color?
