I was wondering if someone already met an agressive dog off leash during a walk with your dog leash on. If yes, what did you do ? and what happen next with the other dog's owner, police.... ?
Unfortunately, this already happened to me. It is pity to observe that most dog's owner just do not control their dog and let them free.
However, I was lucky because I succeed to prevent fight.
My questions are :
Can I kick the agressive dog to protect myself and my dog ?
If I am not enough quick or good to prevent attack ? What will happen if my dog bit the other dog to protect himself ? Indeed, my strong boy (male sharpei) would certainly fight whitout hesitation in order to protect himself if I failled to prevent the fight. To make clear, it is not an agressive dog. He is realy well trained in obediance, extremly self confident and dominant but never agressive.

Yes I've met an aggressive dog off-leash while leash-walking my dog. I tend to avoid off-leash areas to prevent these kinds of encounters, but it was an area in which there is a leash ordinance.
The dog rushed towards us, ears forward tail straight up and without a sound went right for my dog's neck. As he was connecting, my foot connected with his ribs several times which prevented him from getting a good grip. At some point my dog moved behind me (or maybe I moved...kind of a blur) so I was between him and the aggressive dog. The dog kept coming at us so I kept kicking while the owner yelled at me to stop hurting his dog.
I told the owner that I was going to keep kicking until he had his dog under control, however long that took. Keep in mind that I'm a short, weeble of a person, not at all athletic or physically intimidating. Keeping that dog away was a job of work, but the adrenalin kept my foot working. He finally reached us, grabbed his dog by the collar and said something lame like "he's always been so good with the kids".
The other owner said if his dog's ribs were broken, that he would send me the vet bill. I told him that I would be more than happy to exchange information so that I would know his name when I called the police to report a viscous, off-leash dog on the bike path. He said his dog wasn't vicious. I told him that I feared for my safety and that was exactly what I was going to tell the police, and that the leash ordinance meant at minimum he was likely to get a $500 fine. Fortunately during the attack a jogger that I saw nearly every day happened by and said she would happily take my side with the police.
The guy left without giving me any info, but I called animal control and the police anyway, and gave them a description of the dog (essentially it was a grossly overweight, large-ish, brown mix of some kind). I don't know what happened if anything, but I never saw the guy or his dog on the path again.
Unfortunately, the incident turned my slightly reactive dog into a VERY reactive dog, which took me the better part of two years to 'fix'.
YES I would kick the aggressing dog, or whatever else I needed to do to keep the dog away. I don't know what would happen in your area if your dog bit the other dog. In mine, the person who's dog is on-leash automatically has the advantage, especially when it involves an attack by an illegally-loose dog. Obviously it's much better to do everything you can to prevent a fight though.

Thank you for your testimonial Kristel. So I will not hesitate to kick the agressing dog...
I am always dismayed when I hear stupid dog's owner saying it is the first time that their dogs attack another dog....if they said something. Indeed sometimes they just go away after took their dog and mimic some crazy handsplay to say that I was stupid to say something as it is an area in which there is a leash ordinance.Unfortunately, they just do not care about this rule.
Finally, I think that there is a lot of dog's owner but few among them are really responsible people and understand dog.
thank you again for your comment

I would just always be mindful to state that you feared for your OWN safety. At least in Ontario and BC, that is all they care about.

Yes IMO (and i think the Montreal PD would agree) you can kick the dog to protect yourself and your dog. If the dog is off leash in a non off leash area, than you are in the right to keep their animal away from yours, if the owner objects tell him you will gladly contact the police and inform them of the whole situation. They are breaking the law and you are defending yourself.
If I'm concerned about strays in an area i will bring a walking stick. it allows you to keep a larger distance between your pack and the stray, makes you look bigger and you don't put yourself in as much risk.
You need to make it clear to your dog to that protection is your job and you will let them know if this a time to fight or not. so i give an OB command. Heel if i think we can walk past or away from the dogs, or sit and position myself in front of my pack and claim the space.
The best advice i can give is remain calm. When i first adopted my Rotty they said she was dog aggressive and was always panicked in these situations when they first came up, she picked up on it and her dog aggression went from bad to worse. dogs know exactly what your feeling.
If this is a concern for you than do lots of OB in and around controlled dogs and other distractions. A good trainer helped me out of this jam. Now she heels past even the most objectionable dogs.
Read the article on this website "how to brake up a dog fight" that is the safest way. don't be dumb like me and stick your arms in the middle and end with a GSD's K9 punctures in forearm, its really unpleasant.
addition - Spray shield is a product that makes a large cloud of citronella this works to ward off dogs that are not yet being aggressive, i wouldn't expect it to stop a dog whom is already charging you.
good luck
Rob

Thank you both...
Usually Kenji do not pay attention to other dogs during our walk, walk is walk and I never accept any contact with ohter dog during this time. He is fine with this and stay concentrate on me.
However, If we met an agressing dog leash off or on. I do what you said Rob. I put myself in front of Kenji in order to be between dogs. In this situation, Kenji just stay firmly stand face to the agressing dog but do nothing because I am here. He may growl once or twice but no more and wait focusing on the other dog not on me. However, it is clear for me that he will strongly react if the other dog try to bit him.
I was also wondering if I failed to prevent a fight although I put myself between both dogs. Do you think that my dog could reconsider my position as leader
PS/ nice dogs Rob and Phaedra

Yeah i have one of those batons as well, i keep it with all my dog gear people get the wrong idea sometimes. no pistol for us Canadians though lol
Sebastian i think it really matters how you handle in incident and how you treat future contact with strange dogs. Dogs can learn to become more alert and reactive to strange dogs, and the owner can make that better or worse depending on how they handle it. When in doubt always go seek a professional opinion with that kinda thing.
P.s thanks i like em too
