Hi and thanks for allowing me to join here.
We have a new puppy, she is eleven weeks old now. We did the crate-training thing, including using a barrier to restrict her space.
Long story short, she will not go outside to potty. No matter what we do. We can stand out there until the cows come home and she will not go. I take her out dozens of times every day. She will do her business in her crate though, even though everything I have read says that dogs don't go where they sleep. She will also go on the floor. She will come in the house after being out and instantly go somewhere.
I have read that this could be attributable to her environment before we got her. I have potty trained many dogs in my life with no problems but this one is a conundrum. I am home all day so have the time to be consistent and diligent but I have been totally unsuccessful this time.
Here is my question: Whatever happened before I got her is what happened and I can not change what her former owner did or did not do. But from this point forward, where do I start and what do I do to break her of this bad habit? I have poured over countless websites and there is little information on this subject, except to say that *some* dogs will go where they sleep and it is a huge problem. Well, I can attest that it is a huge problem, but if anyone can help me get going in the right direction to retrain her, I would be very grateful indeed.
Thanks in advance.

How long have you had her?
Also, is she tethered to you?

Try not standing around. Move around.
Take her out after she eats. Take her out after she drinks.
There really isn't much training to it. It is just a matter of having her outside when the time happens.
Trust me, she isn't waiting until you go inside to use the bathroom. She is just inside when she needs to go to the bathroom.
I know it feels like an exercise in futility, but it WILL happen.
Maybe you are taking her out too soon? Just adjust your timing a little.

Thanks for your response.
We have only had her a few weeks and we take her out on her leash. She yanks and yanks to get back in the house and when I tell her no, to potty, she jumps up on my legs. After ten of fifteen minutes, I usually take her in and put her in the crate or tether her to me in the house and as if on cue, she goes.

Hi,
Thank you for your response. Yes, we have been doing the after eating/drinking thing. And as soon as she gets up from her naps, first thing in the morning, and dozens of times in between. She is not back in the house for 60 seconds when she pees..somewhere. She goes in the middle of the night and wakes us up after she does....yelping. I am at my wits end.

If your weather's anything like here, it's probably cold, frozen or muddy---which isn't the most pleasant environment for housetraining a puppy.
Even so, I think the trick is to make going outside as much fun as going back inside seems to her now.
Right now, it sounds like going ouside is no fun. When she yanks on the leash to go in, what do you do? Can you somehow get her to engage with you outside--chase you, chase a ball, anything?
Because I agree with Michael 100%. At this age, she has no concept of where she's emptying her bladder. She just goes wherever she is, which is what all puppies do. Houstraining is about YOU having her outside so that she "accidentally" does it right, and you're there to throw a party. If she goes inside, or in the crate, that must be ignored. Or feel free to scold yourself
At this age, you can pretty much be assured they have to pee after eating, drinking, waking up, or playing.
Fill up you pockets with treats, or take along a toy and try to spend longer outside with the pup. How about a long line outside that gives her a little more freedom to roam and sniff?

"I usually take her in and put her in the crate or tether her to me in the house and as if on cue, she goes."
If she is tethered to you and starts to squat, you hustle her outdoors and PARTY for finishing outdoors. You also start a simple log of her potty schedule. And you will learn her body language around potty.
Been there, done that, I SWEAR to you. LOL More than a few dogs who had grown up in a kennel they had to potty in or who had not been inside the house before. You can do this. The dog does NOT get it, believe me. She has an inkling (the too-late yelp in the middle of the night), but breathe deep and remind yourself that the dog wants to do what you want and does not get it yet.
You CAN do this.
Also, devote a couple of days to long enough periods of playing outdoors so that she HAS to go, then PARTY!!!!!!!! Then an hour later, back to that same spot.
The middle of the night thing is 100% management .... meaning, an alarm clock.
