Yesterday was my Kingster's birthday. He is our white German Shepherd, the first animal my husband and I got together.
My husband didn't want a dog but he did want to sell the condo and buy a house. And so began our history of lets make a deal.
We went and picked up Kingster, he was 7 months old and a bit skittish. We put him in the back seat and he leaned over the seat and gave my husband a big slurpy kiss on the neck. And at that moment they gave their hearts to one another.
He is our heart dog, our peacemaker, our Ambassador of Love. As we brought new dogs in he mothered them and showed them the ropes.
He is the one that will put his head in your lap when you are down or sad and look at you with those big brown eyes full of love and you can feel part of your burden lift away.
He is older now and having a hard time moving around. We can't let him out with any of the other dogs because he wants to run with them and for this life his running days are over.
But he still does his morning patrol. He is the first dog I let out after the pups and he patrols every inch of our fenced in area, starting with the perimeter. Takes him a bit longer then he use to but his nose is still working as well as ever. It's almost bittersweet watching him in the mornings because I know when he stops doing the patrol it may be time.
Sounds just like my Springer that I rescued at 4 months. He lived to a wonderful 16. I think Joshie is always going to be that "one" dog in my life. He was my guard dog (wouldn't let salesmen get out of their car or near me), raised kittens and puppies and like Kingster, showed them the ropes. He also saved my life twice.
They are wonderful. Special birthday hugs for you, Kingster!
Happy Birthday Kingster!!! Thor will be 11 on Sunday and is also a fabulous White Shepherd. Betty want to have a joint birthday party? We'll come to Florida to make it easier on you!
Happy Birthday Kingster!
Betty thank you for putting into words almost exactly what I was thinking yesterday when I was laying on the floor with my 11 yr old black gsd.
It amazes me that they still have so much temperament.
Betty! That was just lovely. Happy Birthday to your boy.
I am ashamed to say that I forgot that Ripley's invented birthday was yesterday. I can now call him 6, and when I get home tonight, he's getting a pork chop.
