I've got a scale and chicken backs. My idea of success is no vomiting, no pudding poo, and most importantly, that he'll eat it. Wish us luck in reaching pootopia. (thanks M. Wise for that phrase.)
IF he should refuse this novel food, how long should I let him go without eating?
I plan on a kibble breakfast on Friday, no dinner Friday night, and then a lovely skinned, de-fatted chicken back on Saturday morning.
Oh, also---he gets lots of treats at the dog club. They're not always the best quality. Should I be concerned that these treats are too much like mixing kibble and raw?
Thanks!

I say don't borrow trouble. The one time I had this challenge, I simply started him on a little ground white turkey so he would realize that the new texture would be OK and that this was the taste.
"Oh, also---he gets lots of treats at the dog club. They're not always the best quality. Should I be concerned that these treats are too much like mixing kibble and raw? " What are they? There are so many zillions of soft ones, commercial and homemade, including many right here on LB, that there's really no reason to have to give lots of bad ones.

"My idea of success is no vomiting, no pudding poo .... "
Your plan to skin and de-fat and start with a small meal will avoid that.

Meredith, just wanted to wish you all the best with Saturday's launch!
I can't wait to hear about Ripley's reaction etc.
Please give us an update after the first meal.
I remember my dogs' first meals, they went nuts for it!

I'm a lifetime trouble-borrower, worrier, and perfectionist. Thank you for the reminder not to stress about this and cause Rip to think something is wrong.
As far as treats, I buy him the highest quality stuff I can find. I'm talking about MilkBones and Scooby Snacks he cadges from other people. (He's well-liked.) I can certainly tell people not to feed him if I need to.

See #1 and #3 in the top row here?

You could have baggies of these on you all the time. A little pile of these given to folks who want to treat him (if treating him is OK with you) will end any worries about super-baked extruded large dry treats.

There is even a load of variety in those two choices. And they are a size that means you get a zillion in a package.

Yup. IME, this is BY FAR the most likely reaction.
I love reading about the dog's first raw meals.

One thing that I did that helped make me feel better was that I put in some good quality probiotic powder in with the muscle meat.
I felt that it would just help the dogs gut. I did this as a preventative measure more than anything.
Also it is a good thing to get and keep on hand some plain pumpkin.
That also helps to ensure everything moves along nicely.
I did those things and had no problems what so ever.
I really can't wait to see how this first meal goes, please report back Meredith and let us know.
