The dog apparently endured huge amounts of abuse at the hands of passser's by while faithfull waiting for his master. However, the Japanese now venerate his memory and faithfulness.
The Japanese version was a huge success. Sony sent the American version straight to video. It now shows up on the Hallmark Channel and you can get it on NetFlix.

Speaking of dog movies -what did you all think about "Marley and Me"? Of course the final scenes would get to any dog lover...but frankly (and this probably isn't a popular opinion) I thought the owners were clueless...
i actually had the chance to live in japan for a few years since i am in the military. I was able to got to the train station where the statue is and see it in person. The move does nothing for it. Seeing it in person was about enough to bring tears to your eyes. It is true that the Japanesse do honor the dog. There is a beautiful flower bed all around the statue. It is truely moving for any dog lover

I want to watch that film -I think it features an Akita -a breed I have admired for a long time -elegant, formidible dog..
Also another good one -"A Dog Year" or something like that -sorry! But Jeff Bridges was in it and it was a quiet but moving story about a very unlikely owner/dog relationship -beautifully filmed...and the lady with the herding dogs on the farm that tried to help him was awesome!

I can understand how this would be appealing to dog people, but the author of the book/man the story was based on is a huge narcissist, goes through dogs like potato chips and is pretty clueless about dogs in general. He is a self-proclaim expert but some of his advice is truly pathetic.
Sorry for the strong reaction, but I like to put this info out there anytime this guy is mentioned somewhere to give people a heads up.
