My Husband is a runner. He's trying to get ready for his second marathon, he did one about 10 yrs ago. Husband sees me putting the fish oil
(I give my dog 2-3 per day) +Vit E in the dogs bowl -- so he's started taking it too.
What is the effective joint dose for a 150 lb person? I told him it was 15 caps (he's a physician and didn't believe me)

Betty,
Here's the best resource info I found. How much is in each cap?
"For adults older than 18 years, the tolerable upper limit of dosing for supplementary alpha-tocopherol recommended by the U.S. Institute of Medicine is 1,000 milligrams per day (equivalent to 1,500 IU). This limit recommendation is not altered during pregnancy or breastfeeding."
Aren't we giving 1000 mg salmon oil per 10 lbs? That's what I'm doing!
I thought the recommended dose was much lower than that, but here's my question (I honestly don't know the answer to this)...
Is Salmon Oil considered 100% Vit E? Or is it only a % of the Salmon Oil?
Everything I can find on the human dose of Vit E says the same - maximum of 1,000 mg or 1,500 iu.
If you go back to that Mayo Clinic link and read further in to the warnings it will explain what some of the risks of taking more than this are.
Sorry, I wish I had more time to go in to this but I'm out the door to train with Les Flores!
I'll check back later today and see where we've gone with this. I'm interested to see about the dosage in dogs. I haven't really been adding much in the way of Salmon Oil to JD's diet since he's on TOTW Salmon as it is.

Taking that much salmon oil, he better drink A LOT of OJ to ward of the fish breath!
Seriously, I am not sure if the theraputic dose is the same for people as it is for dogs. I really doubt it, though.

I would do some research before starting a (human) on vitamin E supplements. Within the last few years I believe it has been shown to raise the risk of heart disease.
Omega fatty acid supplements are different. Those are good.
Humans and dogs are different. Good for one isn't necessarily good for the other.

Betty, he should be shooting for 3000 mg/day of EPA +DHA. A good quality fish oil like Carson's Very Finest Liquid will provide approx. 1300 mg EPA + DHA per teaspoon. Fish oil is highly oxidizable (goes rancid quickly), so regardless of what type you use (liquid or gelcaps) keep it in the fridge.
Vitamin 'e' is an antioxidant and helps prevent oxidation internally. It is also a mild blood thinner, as is the fish oil, so if he has any propensity for coagulation problems, he should not take high doses of vit 'e'. A typical dose of 'e' would be 100-200 mg daily. The natural form is better. (d-alpha tocopherol, as opposed to dl-alpha)
He might want to consider taking CoQ10 in the form of ubiquinol; coq10 is essential for heart health and all cellular function, and as we age our bodies make less of it naturally. In particular, anyone on a statin should be supplementing with CoQ10. All JMO, of course, but backed up by studies...(re the heart health)
