So, an opinion question here...
I need to buy a crate for JD for the car for traveling (we're going to the 2 week ME course in Sept!!!). I have a wire crate but it's an XL since it was originally for my Rottie. I also want something that is enclosed since he will be with other dogs. He is not dog agressive in the least, but I'm thinking the privacy will definitely give him a quiet place to destress between sessions.
Just wondering what type of crate folks use and why you chose that one? I know an aluminum crate would be ideal, but that's way out of my category for now
Thanks!

What type of car do you have? If you do not want to go with a wire crate, I would suggest a vari-kennel.

Dana you can borrow mine, if you don't really have a need to use it long term (post ME course) which I don't think you do.
I have 2 vari-kennel ultras- one L and one XXL. I have an abundance of crates...

I have a Dodge Nitro and also a Chevy Avalanche that has the back seat that folds down and the kennel can sit in there.
I've been leaning towards the Vari-Kennel, just was interested to see how other folks felt.
Thanks!

Thanks, Kelly! I think I'm going to go ahead and buy one. I'm starting to think JD might travel a little more at ease in the car if he has a crate. He sort of scrunches himself into a corner in the Nitro. When he was in the truck he wasn't as bad, but the space wasn't as large.
If I decide that I don't need to buy one, however, I will definitely take you up on your generous offer! I do want to have one very early to make sure he's accustomed to it and doesn't have a problem being in it. Don't want to shove the poor little guy in it and say "now we're driving for 2 days!!!!"

I like both types of crates, for different reasons. At home, I have Koenig in a Vari-Kennel right now. Since he busted his tooth trying to get out of a crate, I thought the plastic would be better/less damaging on the teeth if he should have another freak out moment.
Sara stays in her wire crate, as she seems happiest in it rather then the enclosed plastic.
The wire are more secure IMO, as Koe can bust out of the vari-kennel. (To combat this, I have to shove the front up against a wall... I love me dog, I love my dog, I love my dog)
If you come out to 'my' club on Sunday, you can try the Large out for size with JD. It's what I had with me last week as well. Kinda on the small size for Koenig, but he's fine in it @ training. I bet it'd be perfect for the mini-skinny-longlegged-mal.

Hey! Whatchoooo mean callin' my dog a mini-skinny-longlegged mal???
You're the one that kept telling me he wasn't "mini"
JD stayed in the wire crate as a pup and did just fine. I just want to make sure with the other type that he's ok with it being a more enclosed (you saw how huge the wire kennel was).
I'm still debating about Sunday. Weather isn't supposed to be great and I have to go back to Olympia to meet with Les on Friday. I also may need to get together with my girlfriend that's getting married to have her pick out the wood she wants for her cake server to be made out of
I know, it's terrible to have such a busy social calendar!!!

I keep a wire crate in the car, because it has a door on the long side and that's how I have it loaded in the back. Wire crates are very noisy though, so if you have room for the vari-kennel, it will be easier on your ears.
My favorite car crate is a soft sided-one, but has supports made out of some sort of aircraft grade aluminum. It is VERY solid, yet also soft-sided. The ads for depicted a 4-wheeler perched on top of the crate. Don't think they make them any more though.

I actually have found an ad on Craig's list (insert ruh-roh here) for an XL Veri Pet Kennel for $90 very close to me. I've emailed the seller and I'm waiting to hear back.
Since I already have a large wire kennel I'd rather invest in something like the Veri Pet. Plus I'm really thinking JD will like the enclosure in the car.
I've looked at some soft sided kennels but haven't really found any that I think will work for going to the OB course.
Thanks for your input. It reinforces my thoughts on this subject.

I've been thinking about this and I may just borrow one of yours for a little while to see how JD does in it before I go all out and buy one. That way if he really doesn't like it I can just borrow it for the ME course and not put out the $$ for something he doesn't like - especially since I have the wire kennel.
Does that sound ok with you?
