Hi All,
I own a Golden Retriever named KIA. She is a pure bread. She is 4 years old.
Since childhood she has a habit of scratching. Mostly she scratches below armpits of front legs. She dose not have any Flea or Tik in her for sure. Most of the time she keeps on scratching. I have kept her very clean because of this.
She is not on Dog food. She is having Raw Diet as advised in Grow Your Pups With Bones.I have tried changing her diet and shampoo too but nothing is helping. I am using Biogroom Oat Meal or Tea Tree Oil shampoo which is gentle on her skin. Have tried Johnson baby soap too.
She sometimes eats sweets or ice cream. Can this be a problem.
Please help and advice on this.
Thanks.
Shailesh Sheth.

Please tell us if you have read anything here (hundreds of threads!) about inhalant and environmental allergies.
Also tell us how bad the scratching is (is the dog losing sleep, is the scratching frantic, etc.), and why you think for sure no fleas. What flea prevention do you use, if any? You have carefully brushed and combed the dog (not right after a bath) over a white sheet? I mean, a procedure taking 45 minutes or so? And there were no black specks on the sheet? You know how to identify flea "pepper"? (This would be to moisten it with a tiny drop of water and watch it turn red.)
I would lay off the sweets; I think sugar is pretty bad for dogs. But I don't think it's related here.
JMO! Post back with details. Odor in armpits or folds? Any other itchy area? Inside of ears look good, pale pink, clear of gunk?
PS
Please STOP using people shampoo on the dog. No Johnson's, no people shampoo at all. (It's bad for dog skin because of the extreme pH difference.)

It's more than likely an environmental allergy (pollen, dust, mold, mildew etc.)
Have you taken her to a vet yet, or better yet, a Derm Vet to see what they say?
there are a TONNE of threads on this forum regarding this type of scratching itching that will contain a lot of good information for you.
ps..sorry connie, didn't see you had already posted!

This would be my next step, too, after re-addressing fleas (which is the most likely allergy of all, depending on the areas affected; don't forget to mention all areas of the body that she scratches).
Flea hypersensitivity: Number 1
Environmental/inhalant: Number 2
Food: a far behind Number 3

Dear Connie and Wendy,
She is not loosing sleep and and not frantic except sometimes. I am very sure that she does not have fleas and ticks as she has a short coat and its easy to search fleas if needed. I use only Frontline and only if needed. She has no odor in armpits or folds. She also wants us to scratch her in the area just above the tail (lower back).
There is always lot of dark brown wax in her ears which i clean every 15 days. earlier i used to walk her in garden and playground but now i walk her on promenade just to check there is no pollen but there is no difference. She is been doing since she was small. I still have not shown her to any Vet yet.
I will try to check for fleas by putting white sheet and brushing her.
Thanks a lot for your prompt reply and help.
Shailesh.

Base of tail= classic flea area
Legs= classic flea area
One exposure can drive a hypersensitive dog nuts. That means one flea bite.
What does "only if needed mean"? That you have seen fleas on her?
But I would want a cytology on that ear debris.
What are you cleaning the ear with, and is it pale and healthy-looking when you have removed gunk?

I second Connie on this. My very first dog had a SEVERE flea allergy and yes, just 1 bite would send him into a frenzy. He'd scratch until his butt and hind legs were raw. I can't tell you how many courses of Prednisone that poor guy went through.
Fortunately this was just about the time they came out with Frontline, although the only way to get it applied was to take him to the vet. It was still worth every cent I spent on it.
When you use the Frontline does the scratching stop? If it does, then I strongly believe it is fleas even if you can't see them. If so, then you might want to do a straight 3 months using Frontline and if the scratching stops - voila!

I have a flea-sensitive, 15 lb. white dog with less than inch long hair. A flea still sneaks past me from time to time.

What makes you think psoriasis? Wouldn't there be some visual indicators accompanying the itching?
