I'm ordering a new long line. I got to thinking about how much I hate when the cotton ones get heavy when they are wet. So I'm thinking about a tracking line instead.
I just want it as an emergency brake. I rely on public property to exercise my dog and I feel better having her on a line. She will be dragging it, so its important that it dosent get too slippery for me to step on it if needed.
It dosen't have to have a handle. I usually cut them off anyway.
Lauren, I used to use a thin, nylon "marine" cord which I purchased at Home Depot. I also bought a clip and the cord came with a little "tool" that allowed for attaching the clip. The advantage was it was VERY lightweight but strong, and didn't wick up any moisture. The negative was that it was narrow/thin and could give a "rope burn" if I wasn't careful.
I hestitated posting this because I'm not trying to cancel a sale of a LB product, but did want to tell you about it incase it fit the bill.
Its a good idea, but the thing is that I am purchasing it mostly because I have no choice but to run her at the park and we have issues with strange dogs. I wouldn't want a home made leash to break apart in an emergency.
She is really tuned into me when we play any game. There could be a dog thirty or forty feet away and she doesn't care about them. Its more if another dog approaches us.
Its funny, and completely irrelevant to the long line issue, but I have found a feild in my neighborhood where you only see GSDs. That's the one I use now, because they all are just like her. When they are playing with their owners they don't care about anything else!
I can be at one end, somebody else can be on the other and the dogs will pay absolutely n attention to eachother.
Its also a good park because its no good for people who just let their dogs wander. There is nothing of interest there except a flat feild.
I also have the Bevis Line that I'm totally in love with. Very strong, easy on the hands and also doesn't soak up water. I haven't had it yanked through my hands so I can't comment on the 'burn factor' I still use it for tracking and noticed that it doesn't seem to attract a lot 'stickers' which is also nice.
