Is there a simple way to stop licking? Charlie sits well to have the leash put on and taken off but any time you put your hand around his head he wants to lick it. No matter where you move your hand his tongue follows.
Putting a deterrant on the hands might work, but I knew a dog who loved bitter apple, so that is not always dependable. I would also think that the odor alone would tell him when you did or did not have anything on your hands so he could learn to only not lick when the odor was present.
Does he like to hold things in his mouth? If so, give him a ball to hold for a moment and attach the leash. I also think marker training would be very helpful. Are you familiar with that process?
Am working with Ed's BDO Video now, first dog I have tried to train myself, all others I have sent off for training. He is responding well to training, I just run into these little things that I can't always find directly addressed in training videos, thanks for your help.
He is way too sweet, all he wants to do is please you and if you scold him for anything he just bats those pitiful eyes at you. Makes it a challenge to train. He is 8 months old.
I need help with that too. My bindi is a licker. My husband hates it and won't pet her any more, which only makes her desire to lick him worse. I deal with her all day and she doesn't lick me unless nervous. We have tried everything and she just won't stop. So, any advise is great. she also does it to the grandkids, they tell her know and I ask her to move away and she does, but if I didn't correct her she will lick and lick and lick. Greatly appreciate your help. Bindi loves my husband and sits for hours by the door when she thinks he is on his way home, nothing distracts her. Sharon
Licking like this can be an OCD behavior. It may be helpful to work with your vet and medicate while trying simultaneously to train away from it. It can be a very difficult behavior to eliminate without the assistance of pharmaceuticals, if it's indeed OCD-related.
I disagree bigtime about using meds for this. Teach the dog what "no" means and then implement the command. My gibbs is a licker and it took awhile but he figured it out.
It doesn't sound like the pup in the original post is OCD about it. It sounds like he is a sweetie with an annoying habit. I would also think medication was absurd in this case.
But I did know a dog that was an OCD licker. He would take all the makeup off your face and lick your hands raw if you let him. It was a genuine problem. Not really just a training issue.
