Soooo........Fetz ended up with a left ear hematoma, and the vet placed a drain in ( a good time was *not* had by all ).
It's been about three weeks now and I'll be returning for removal on Friday.
His Left ear is at half-mast now, I can feel that the interior of his ear is solid and the drain is dry - so basically Fetz has cauliflower ear like a wrestler, any chance that the ear will tip up again?

I know one dog who had that happen. His ear did stand up in about 2 months. Maybe it was longer.
There was something going on called an "indwelling cannula" -- is that the drain you mentioned? It took weeks after that was gone for the ear to stand up again, and it stayed kind of wrinkly-looking, but nothing like it was.

Was it completely hanging down and now it's gone up to half-mast?

Poor Fetz. I bet that has been no fun at all!
My only experience with an ear hematoma was with a ferret. Her ear returned to normal, size & shape(after surgery to drain the ear etc.) But they don't exactly have stand up ears.
This ear problem usually happens to floppy ears dogs, (from excessive head shaking that slaps their ears against their head) not pointy eared ones. Hope that the Fetz-man's ear pops back up after all is said & done.

Will,
What caused the hematoma (if you don't mind my asking)? I'm wondering if that might give a better idea of whether or not the ear will return to its previous state or not.
The only drain I've ever had on a dog was a penrose drain in a cheek from a bite. He also developed an area like you're describing (solid) but the cheek did return completely to normal. Sorry I can't tell you if the ear will tip back up or not, but hopefully this helps a little.

I know of a GSD and Mal that this happened to, after the drain was removed they filled with blood again. They had a surgical procedure done, an incision and removing tissue where the hematoma was. The ear was sewn up with many sutures and somewhat wrapped, ears stand on both dogs, Are you using an Elizabethan collar, those can push the ear down. I had a Lab that had surgery many tims for hematomas. His ears always hung funny for months after but always seemed to return to normal.

It may go back up especially if the ear is just tipped, more like a collie than a lab.
My last ACD developed a hematoma on her ear--with no Rx and 6 mos it returned to its normal shape, the ear was a bit thicker and stiffer than normal but regained the "prick"look.

My last GSD (in signature picture) developed an aural hematoma at 12 (no known cause). She had 3 or 4 procedures but the ear did not return to normal. The vet suggested a "prosthesis" could be inserted in the ear flap. I declined because I felt that she had been put through enough already for a cosmetic problem.
I must say that I do wonder, if her problem was related to an issue that I did not know about at the time. About 2 months later, she had her spleen removed due to hemangiosarcoma. During the surgery, she almost bled to death because of decreased coagulation. So, perhaps (my thoughts only) that reduced coagulation may have either led to the hematoma or contributed to the failure of the corrective procedures. I do know that after the last attempt to correct it, when we got home she immediately started violently shaking her head. This caused the ear to fill again with blood (worse than before) and my kitchen had blood all over the place and it was hard to stop the ear bleeding.

I don’t have any advice to offer but that Fetz dog sounds like quite the warrior. To me a downed ear on a combatant like that would add certain amount of charm. Kind of like that enchanting animal magnetism we have for heroes with war wounds.
Best of luck with the tough guy. I’m sure he’ll remain as handsome as ever, running full mast or not.

My boy had one on each ear unfortunately, one REALLY big and one only small, but before I got him to the vet they started to go down and disappeared but he still has some hair loss and a hard skin thingy where the big one was. Hopefully Fetz all heals up nicely with a full prick and tip
