Last year there was a crop in California that was decimated from bad weather, our stores were out for nearly a year!
But now it is back here in the Dallas/Ft Worth area since last Thanksgiving.
I am surprised you can't find it now. But what I did for the meantime was used my own boiled sweet potato or squash.
You could even try baby food in those options too if you are desperate.
I know I have seen it also online at Amazon,a little pricey but still they have it.
This is the second year in a row that there's been a shortage. I tried to grow sugar pumpkins last summer after the first shortage and got hit with powdery mildew.
Lost all but a few.
When it was available this fall I bought about 30 cans and laughed when my family called me a hoarder. I still have some...and there's none in the markets.
You might be able to find some in the organic section of the market at three times the price but if you really need a can it will be worth it.
That’s interesting Lori, I wonder if this is going to become a trend. We don’t “need” it that often but do add it the odd time for a bit of variety, the boys really like it.
We’ve got a new house mate that I’ve been given the “OK” to start on and feed raw during his stay. I’m just finishing up the bag of Orijen he came with and settling him in for the long haul. Just wanted to have a can on hand should things get messy.
Great suggestions Joyce, thanks. Good luck in your search too Mr. Snyder.
Last year my dog's breeder in MA had trouble finding it and was a little worried because she had a litter on the way. We didn't have a shortage here in Toronto so when I went down for a visit I took a case down with me for her. That held her over until they started getting it again down there.
This past summer she grew a huge pumpkin patch and had a pumpkin canning day I was able to be a participant in. We canned over 150 lbs of pumpkin. She won't be caught without pumpkin again this year (or the few years to be exact).
I'm thinking I should be stocking up while I can. You never know if/when the shortage may hit Canada.
