We were out at the beach today, and I swear Jethro was drinking the sea water. Later, he also drank a huge amount of puddle water. This evening he had these gigantic pee breaks - I mean, peeing for 30 seconds straight! Twice. He also had a big whoosh of diarrhea - it looked like dirty sea water coming out his back end.
I didn't feed him his evening meal. I'm hoping he is going to settle down.
Does anyone have an experience with dogs at the beach? Drinking sea water? What to do...
I was with my dog once at the beach and he like to chase the waves. He bit in them like crazy. Sure by doing this he swallowed a lot of sea water. After that he had also twice a big whoosh coming out of his rear end. I was worried he will mess up the car because it took us 4 hours to go home. But after those two times he did not have any problems. He did not indicate that he has to go on the way home. I did not give him dinner. Just in case. The next day he was fine. It probably cleaned him out.
Just make sure that he drinks a lot of water to avoid dehydration. Its a good idea to bring water with you if you are going to spend a say at the beach.
Dogs and salt water equals diarrhea. Normally very soon afterwards in our dogs' case. Lauren is correct, you should keep fresh water on hand and rinse the dogs off when getting home to get the sand/salt off their coats/skin.
It has never lasted for our dogs other than the one or two "outbursts" at the beach.
They normally sleep very well after playing at the beach.
Oh, once upon a time, it seems like another life, I lived by the sea.
They drink the ocean only a few times, and they get diarrhea, then they figure it out. Water on hand helps.
(Careful with beach parking lot puddles due to possible antifreeze contamination,
campers and overheated RVs)

Luca's first trip to the beach several years ago involved a lot of sea water drinking followed by vomiting sea water. We'll be at the beach again in a few days so I'm hoping he'll remember. Fanny's (corgi) first beach trip involved a UTI. Fun!
